Drinking Water Supply

The Consequences of Chlorination and Fluoridation

Water is the issue most crucial to all life on Earth. Water is the life-blood of our planet, the life-giving fluid in all organisms, plants, animals and human beings alike, flowing as sap, lymph or blood; our very existence is therefore intimately connected with the quality of water available to us. It is vital for own lives and those of our children that we should become seriously concerned not only for the health, vitality and quality of the water we drink, but also for its original source and the treatment it receives. Apart from our own consumption of it, this same water is also used to grow everything we eat. If we want to live in health and happiness, then the living entity - water - should be highly revered and the most sensitive care taken of it.

In the previous chapter we briefly mentioned the harmful effects of chlorination, but we need to examine the process and its ramifications more fully. Today the drinking water supplied to almost all the inhabitants of so-called civilized countries is chlorinated and sometimes even fluoridated. The purpose of this treatment is to sterilize the water, to free it of all noxious micro-organisms and pathogenic bacteria.

Present methods of water treatment and reticulation kill water, however, and bad water or wrongly treated water debilitates, degrades, degenerates and ultimately destroys those organisms constantly forced to drink it. Science, however, completely overlooks the fact that water - as life-carrier - is itself alive and needs to be kept in this condition if it is to fulfill its naturally ordained function for, as Viktor Schauberger has stated:

Science views the blood-building and character-influencing UR-ORGANISM -'WATER' merely as a chemical compound and provides millions of people with a liquid prepared from this point of view, which is everything but healthy water.1

But what does modern, denaturised civilisation care, as long as it receives a suitably hygienised, clear liquid with which to shower, wash its dishes, clothes and cars? Once down the plug-hole, in company with all manner of toxic chemicals and detergents, all is comfortingly out of sight and out of mind. As proof of the efficacy of current disinfective practices and to justify their continuance, officialdom usually points out that such water-borne diseases as cholera and typhoid are virtually unknown in all countries where the water is chlorinated.

Thus reassured, the broad mass of the population blithely continues to bask in the luxury of apparently disease-free water in complete ignorance of the perils arising from its constant consumption, for what is never stated in official explanations is the cumulative effect this treatment of water has on the organisms forced to drink it. What people do not know is that, although the chlorination of drinking and household water-supplies ostensibly disinfects it and removes the threat of water-borne diseases, it does so to the detriment of the consumer.

In view of the fact that our body's water content amounts to 45 liters and that our daily consumption of water is about 2.4 litres, just consider the following:2

THE BLOOD PLASMA >>> (main blood component) >>> about 92% water
THE HUMAN FOETUS >>> (our growing physical vehicle) >>> about 90% water
THE BLOOD >>> (life-fluid & nutrient conveyor) >>> up to 90% water
THE HUMAN BRAIN CELLS >>> (intellect, creativity, behaviour) >>> are 85% water
THE KIDNEYS >>> (fluid processors & purifiers) >>> are 82% water
THE MUSCLES >>> (prime movers of the body >>> average 75% water
THE BODY >>> (our abode on Earth) >>> is 71% water
THE LIVER >>> (metabolism regulator) >>> is 69% water
THE BONES >>> (structural support system) >>> are 22% water
THE BODY'S CELL-FLUIDS >>> (basis of growth & development) >>> are mainly water

In its function as water steriliser or disinfectant, chlorine eradicates all types of bacteria, beneficial and harmful alike, so that what arrives at the tap or faucet, while indeed free of every possible organism, is water that has been sterilized to death; in other words, a water-corpse. More importantly and more alarmingly, however, it also disinfects the blood (up to 90% water) or sap (ditto) and in doing so kills off or seriously weakens many of the immunity-enhancing micro-organisms living in the body of those organisms that continuously consume it.

This eventually impairs their immune systems to such a degree that they are no longer able to eject viruses, germs and cancer cells, to which the respective host-bodies ultimately fall victim. We therefore actually sterilise our blood when we drink chlorinated water, thereby readying ourselves for the onset of disease.

Of late there has been an alarming increase, not only in hitherto unknown diseases, but in all forms of sickness, cancer in particular. Even the appearance of other lethal afflictions such as AIDS would have come as no surprise to Viktor Schauberger, for apart from the other inevitable disturbances to the ecology and the environment occasioned by humanity's unthinking activities, as early as 1933 he foresaw all these unwholesome developments as the legitimate and inevitable consequence of the mistreatment and artificial pollution of water with chemical additives.

Just imagine what effect the constant drinking of dead or diseased water has on the blood and all the vital organs of the body. What happens to the life-force essential for healthy growth?

And what are the effects of chlorination? Chlorine is not added to drinking water in vast quantities. Averagely it is administered at about 10 parts per million (ppm), (see fig. 5.1) providing always that the dispensing and metering equipment is properly maintained and monitored. Malfunction, however, can never be ruled out, with the result that over-chlorination may occur more frequently than we are led to believe. [In the 1995 drought, thousands of residents of Cornwall in south-west England got ill, when the volume of water in the supplies was insufficient to 'water down' these chemicals 'safely'.]

According to Nobel-prizewinner Prof. Otto Warburg, later confirmed by Noble-prizewinner Prof. Gerhard Domagk, cancer cells were formed as a result of a deficiency of oxygen, which produces a reversal in the metabolism whereby the nutritive substances are fermented by the cells into lactic acid. This provides the cell with additional energy to grow more rapidly and to divide faster than other cells, eventually developing into a cancer cell proper, oxygen shortage and over-acidity being the characteristic hallmarks of cancer cells.4

There is a further noxious characteristic of chlorine worthy of note. Because even a small ray of light suffices to make it explode, chlorine gas has to be mixed with water in darkness. It could therefore be reasonably assumed that even on the minutest scale, explosions will occur when the capillaries immediately under the skin are exposed to sunlight, causing their partial rupture.

The Nature of Water

How blossomingly I rejoice! All hail to the new! All is born of water and upheld by water too! Transpierced thus am I by beauty and by truth! Oh great ocean, grant us thine eternal ruth!

For wouldst thou not send clouds, nor bounteous streams endow,

Nor perfect the currents, nor rivers here and there bestow,

Then where would mountains be and what of plains and world?

For thou alone it is that keeps this freshest life unfurled.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Water - a Living Substance
WATER! Where do we begin our quest in search of the true nature of this remarkable substance, this wondrous, many-facetted jewel, which is both Life and liquid? So Primordial, primeval and fundamental is the function of water that it begs the question as to which came first, life or water. Thales of Miletus (640-546BC) described water as the only true element from which all other bodies are created, believing it to be the original substance of the cosmos. It was the only real substance, because it was imbued with the quality of Being.

This view was also firmly held by Viktor Schauberger, who was water as the 'original' substance formed by the subtle energies called into being through the 'original' motion of the Earth, itself the manifestation of even more sublime forces. Being the offspring or the 'First Born' of these energies, as he put it, he maintained and frequently asserted that "Water is a living substance!" a notion to which Goethe also subscribed in the above poem.1

As a living entity, Viktor saw water as the accumulator and transformer of the energies originating from the Earth and the Cosmos, and as such was and is the foundation of all life-processes and the major contributor to the conditions which make life possible. Not only that, but once mature, water is a being invested with the power of extraordinary giving and gives of itself to all things requiring life in the ECI's Great Plan. It is the ECI's faithful life-messenger and, in its eternal cycles, coils and twists in its natural movement about the path of evolution, like the serpents on Mercury's staff.

The Upholder of the Cycles which supports the whole of life, is WATER. In every drop of water dwells a Deity, whom we all serve; there also dwells Life, the Soul of he 'First' substance - Water - whose boundaries and banks are the capillaries that guide in which it circulates.2

Viktor Schauberger

Water is therefore a being that has life and death. With incorrect, ignorant handling, however, it becomes diseased, imparting this conditions to all other organisms, vegetable, animal and human alike, causing their eventual physical decay and death, and in the case of human beings, their moral, mental and spiritual deterioration as well. With this awareness we can see just how vital it is that water should be handled and stored in such a way as to avoid such disastrous consequences. When we fail to perceive water as a living entity which nurtures all life, we arrest water's creative cycles, we stop life and water is transformed into a dangerous enemy.

Viktor Schauberger's understanding of water and what he achieved as a result is well exemplified in this quotation from his book, Our Senseless Toil, written in 1933:

It is possible to regulate watercourses over any given distance without embankment works; to transport timber and other materials, even when heavier than water, for example ore, stones, etc., down the centre of such water-courses; to raise the height of the watertable in the surrounding countryside and to endow the water with all those elements necessary for the prevailing vegetation.

Furthermore it is possible in this way to render timber and other such materials non-inflammable and rot resistant; to produce drinking and spa-water for man, beast and soil of any desired composition and performance artificially, but in the way that it occurs in Nature; to raise water in a vertical pipe without pumping devices; to produce any amount of electricity and radiant energy almost without cost; to raise soil quality and to heal cancer, tuberculosis and nervous disorders.

…the practical implementation of this… would without doubt signify a complete reorientation in all areas of science and technology. By application of these new found laws, I have already constructed fairly large installations in the spheres of log-rafting and river regulation, which as is known, have functioned faultlessly for a decade, and which today still present insoluble enigmas to the various scientific disciplines concerned.3

But before going further, let us acquaint ourselves with some of the more commonly known facts about water. First of all, whence did water come? Obviously it cannot have come from the upper atmosphere, since as we saw in chapter 6 the water molecule is actually dissociated at high altitudes. Where else do we look then? If not above then perhaps below, because the atmosphere does not seem conducive to its formation. If below then where? Has it been contained in a crystalline state in ore-bearing rocks since the Earth began? There is some evidence to suggest that it has.

In The Divining hand4 Christopher Bird describes the pioneering theories and discoveries of Stephan Riess in the United States, which like Viktor Schauberger's completely contradicted established hydraulic theory. According to Stephan Riess under certain conditions the oxygen and hydrogen gases present in certain types of rock can be released due to the effects of geothermal heat and a process akin to triboluminescence, a phenomenon relating to the light given of by crystalline rocks under friction or violent pressure. This glow is attributed to the energy given off by the electrons contained the rocks as they return from a pressure induced, excited state to their rest orbits. As a discharge it imparts free energy to the surrounding material, which could be sufficient to cause the hydrogen and oxygen released by the pressure to form new water under a process of cold oxidation.

Riess called this virgin water, and as a result of his knowledge he was able to tap straight into formations of hard rock of the right composition and obtain very large quantities of water, in some cases as much as 3,000 gallons per minute. All this right out in the middle of the desert, where no water could be expected. Unfortunately, his efforts to provide needy areas with copious quantities of superb quality, fresh water were sabotaged. As happened to Viktor Schauberger before him, Christopher Bird relates how Riess was slandered and his ideas brought into disrepute through the scurrilous activities of certain high officials in the state of California, whose interest were threatened by Riess' discoveries.

As a liquid, water is chemically described as H2O and is a dipole molecule comprising two hydrogen atoms, one positive and one negative, and one negative oxygen atom containing two positive charges. Due to the distribution of the charges around the nucleus, the angle between the two hydrogen atoms is 104.350, as shown in upper right-hand inset in fig. 8.1. According to Kenneth S. Davis and John Arthur Day, pure water is actually a mixture of 18 different molecular compounds and 15 different kinds of ions, making a total of different substances5. In this regard The Secret Doctrine comments:

Even on the next higher plane, that single element which is defined on our Earth by current science, as the ultimate undecomposable constituent of some kind of matter, would be pronounced in the world of a higher spiritual perception as something very complex indeed. Our purest water would be found to yield, instead of its two declared simple elements of oxygen and hydrogen, many other constituents, undreamt of by our terrestrial modern chemistry. 6

In its pure form, being a compound of the two gases hydrogen and oxygen, water could technically be described as an oxide of hydrogen. Water is no self-contained, isolated substance, however, for it possesses other characteristics according to the medium or the organism in which it resides and moves. As a molecule, water has an extraordinary capacity to combine with more elements and compounds than any other molecule and is sometimes described as the universal solvent. As such it is able to provide the basis for an intimate intermixture of substances which Viktor referred to as an 'emulsion'. The more complex the make-up of constituents dissolved or suspended in water, the more complex the emulsion and the broader the spectrum of its properties. Carbon, its so-called inorganic counterpart, has a similar capacity above and beyond all other elements. At a physical level water is to be found in three states of aggregation, solid (ice), liquid (water) and gaseous (water vapour) and in terms of its structure as a liquid, it tends more to the crystalline, as it continually forms and re-forms nodes of temporary crystallisation, exhibiting a space-lattice structure, such as is shown in figs. 8.2 & 8.3 taken from a homeopathic study of water by Dr. Gerhard Resch and Prof. Viktor Gutmann7.

The Anomaly Point of Water
The anomalous expansion of water is also a factor of major importance. While this has already been pertly covered in chapter 7, further elaboration is necessary. To recapitulate briefly: As a liquid, the behaviour of water differs from all other fluids. While all fluids become consistently and steadily denser with cooling, water reaches its densest state at a temperature of +40 Celsius (39.20 Fahrenheit). This is the so-called 'anomaly point', which is decisive in terms of its potency and has a major influence on its quality. Below this temperature it once more expands. At +40C water has a density of 0.99996 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm3), has the least special volume and is virtually incompressible (fig. 8.1).

Plus 40C also signifies the temperature where water has it's the highest energy content and is in what Viktor called a state of ;indifference'. In other words, when in its highest natural condition of health, vitality and life-giving potential, water is at an internal state of energetic equilibrium and in a thermally and spacially neutral condition. In order to protect water's health, energy and life-force, certain precautions must be taken, which will be addressed later. For the present it is important to realise that the +40C anomaly is crucial to water's diverse functions. Viktor's theories about the temperature gradient and their implementation will be elaborated in the following section.

If water's temperature rises above +40C, it expands. When it cools below this level then it also begins to expand and becomes specifically lighter. This anomalous expansion below +40C is vital to the survival to fish life, for as the water expands and cools further it eventually crystallises as ice at 00C, thus providing a floating, insulating sheath, which protects the aquatic life underneath from the harmful effects of serve external cold in winter. The specific gravity of water at +00C =0.99984g/cm3. As 1 spacial unit of water expands into ice, its volume increases in the ratio of 0.9168:0.99984 or 1:1.09058, which is equivalent to an increase in displacement of about 1/11th of its former volume as water. This is why ice floats.

Dielectrics and Electrolysis
While pure water's high dielectric value of 81, namely its capacity to resist the transfer of an electric charge, has already been mentioned in chapter 7, there is another aspect to this which, in the light of Viktor Schauberger's concept of hydrogen as the carrier of oxygen and carbone (fig. 5.1, see p. 83),needs to be looked at in relation to one of the major fallacies of science. Still taught as Gospel truth in all schools and universities, electrolysis is supposedly the process by which water is dissociated into its constituent atoms of hydrogen and oxygen. However from the above we know that pure water will not transmit an electric current and this factor is also used to measure the pollution of water using what are called electro-conductivity units or ecus. The greater the content of dissolved and suspended matter in water, the greater its capacity to carry an electric current and the higher the values in ecus registered.

In order to set the process of electrolysis in motion, however, it is necessary to add some acid, such as sulphuric acid - H2SO4 - to the distilled water, the acid here always being referred to as the 'catalyst'. A catalyst is an element or agent which inaugurates a given reaction, but is not itself affected or changed in any way by it. This can be learnt from any physics textbook. From time to time, however, if electrolysis is to continue, more acid must be added otherwise the process will cease and all that will be left once again is water. But this acid was supposed to be the catalyst and therefore impervious to the effects of the electric current! What happened to it?

As the process of electrolysis proceeds, oxygen gas and hydrogen gas are indeed released, the negatively charged hydrogen ions migrating towards the positive electrode and the positively charged oxygen ions towards the negative electrode. Are these released gases actually derived from the water, however, or do they originate from the added acid? Sulphuric acid is formed of 2 hydrogen atoms, 1 sulphur atom and 4 oxygen atoms. If these gases are in fact produced through the dissociation of the acid rather than the water, then the whole process of electrolysis as presently taught is a widespread fraud as Viktor claimed in his 1932 article "Electrolysis"8.

The Secret doctrine also advances thought-provoking comment on what might be the state of being of the various elements of acid and water when combined as a mixture in electrolysis.

The question whether Hydrogen and Oxygen to exist when they combine to form water, is still a moot one, some arguing that since they are found again when water is decomposed, they must be there all the while; others contending that as they actually turn into something totally different they must cease to exist as themselves for the time being; but neither side is able to form the faintest conception of the real condition of a real condition of a thing, which has become something else and yet has not ceased to be itself.9

It appears then that water retains its identity when in the electrolyte (the mixture of water and acid), and once the electrolytic process has been completed, then all that remains is again water.

A further life-giving property of water is its high specific heat and thermal conductivity (which were studied in chapter 6), namely the ability and the rate at which it absorbs and releases heat. This means that a large input or extraction of heat energy is required to bring about a change in density and temperature. The lowest point of the curve of the specific heat values for water, however, is +37.50C or 99.50F (fig. 8.1). It is remarkable that the lowest specific heat of this 'inorganic' substance - water - lies but 0.50C (0.90F) above the normal +370C (98.60F) human blood temperature - at which the greatest amount of heat or cold is required to change the water's temperature. This property of water to resist rapid thermal change enables us, with blood composed of up to 90% water, together with many other animals and creatures, to survive a relatively large range and fluctuation of temperatures and still maintain our own internal bodily temperature. Pure accident so we are told, or is it clever, symbiotic design?! If the blood in our bodies had a lower specific heat, it would mean that it would heat up much more rapidly to the point where we would either start to decompose or freeze if exposure was to extreme cold.

However, in our mechanistic world we are used to thinking about temperature in gross terms (automobile engines operate at temperatures of 1,0000C (1,8320F) or so and many industrial processes employ extremely high temperatures. Despite the fact that we begin to feel unwell if our temperature rises by as little as 0.50C (0.90F), we fail to see that non-mechanical, organic life an health are based on very subtle differences in temperature. When our body temperature is +370C (98.60F) we do not have a 'temperature' as such. We are healthy and, recalling Viktor's view, are in an 'indifferent' or 'temperature-less' state. Just a good water is the preserver of our proper bodily temperature, our anomaly point of greatest health and energy, so too does it preserve this planet as a habitat for our continuing existence. Water in all its forms and qualities is thus the mediator of all life and deserving of the highest focus of our esteem.

Water and its vital interaction with the forest was Viktor's principal preoccupation, viewing water as the 'Blood of Mother-Earth', which in contrast to Carl Riess' theories mentioned earlier, was born in the womb of the high forest. This will be examined more fully later. Our mechanistic, materialistic and extremely superficial way of looking considering water to be anything other than inorganic, i.e. supposedly without life, but which, while apparently having no life itself, can nevertheless miraculously create life in all its forms.

Life is movement and is epitomized by water in a constant state of motion and transformation, both externally and internally. Flowing as water, sap and blood, this life molecule is the creator of the myriad life-forms on his planet. How then could it ever be construed as life-less as in the chemist's clinical view of water, defined as the inorganic substance H2O?

This cryptic symbol is a gross misrepresentation. Were water merely the sterile, distilled H2O as presently described by science, it would be poisonous to all living things. H2O or 'juvenile water' is sterile, distilled water and devoid of any so-called 'impurities'. It has no developed character and qualities. As a young, immature, growing entity, it grasps like a baby at everything within reach. It absorbs the characteristics and properties of whatever it comes into contact with or has attracted to itself in order to grow to maturity. This 'everything' - the 'impurities' - takes the form of trace elements, minerals, salts and even smells! Were we to drink pure H2O constantly, it would quickly leach out all our store of minerals and trace elements, debilitating and ultimately killing us. Like a growing child, juvenile water takes and does not give. Only when mature, i.e. when suitably enriched with raw materials, is it in a position to give, to dispense itself freely and willingly thus enabling the rest of life to develop.

Fresh Water has many principal qualities, which can be differentiated according to drinking quality.
Water Type Description Drinking Quality
Distilled water Purest water, contains no other elements. bad
Meteoric (rainwater) Contains some atmospheric gases. poor
Juvenile (immature water) Contains few minerals or trace elements. poor

Groundwater Contains a greater quantity of minerals.  good
Seepage-spring water As for groundwater. good
True spring water  High in dissolved carbons and minerals best
Artesian water Deep-lying water which may be fresh or saline and can contain a variety of dissolved elements and gases variable

Qualities of Water
But what is this marvelous, colourless, tasteless and odourless substance, which quenches our thirst like no other fluid? Did we but truly understand the essential nature of water - a living liquid - we would not treat it so churlishly, but would care for it as if our lives depended on it, which undoubtedly they do.

Apart from the actual treatment of water investigated in chapter 15, certain types of water are more suitable for drinking than others, the following being a general classification to be read in conjunction with fig.8.4.

DISTILLED WATER
This is what is considered physically and chemically to be the purest form of water. Having no characteristics other then total purity, it has a pre-programmed will to itself all the substances it needs to become mature itself, and therefore absorbs and grasps at everything within reach. Such water is really quite dangerous if drunk continuously long-term. When distilled water (aqua destillata) is drunk it acts as a purgative, stripping the body of trace minerals and elements. On occasion it has been used for its short-term therapeutic effect, such as in the so-called 'Kneipp cure', where it acts to purge the body of excessive deposits of various materials.

METEORIC WATER - RAINWATER
While the purest naturally available water, noxious atmospheric pollutants aside, meteoric water or rainwater is also unsuitable for drinking in the long term. It is marginally better than distilled water and slightly richer in minerals, due to the absorption of atmospheric gases and dust particles. As a living organism it is still in adolescence, still immature, and needs to undergo certain ripening processes in order to be able to be absorbed by the body and to be of benefit to it. When drunk as melted snow-water, it also gives rise to certain deficiencies and if no other water is available on occasion of the thyroid gland.

JUVENILE WATER
Juvenile water, again, is immature water, but it is water coming from the ground. It has not matured properly on its passage through the ground. It emerges, perhaps in the form of geysers, etc., from quite a long way down. It has not yet resolved itself into a mature structure and is therefore still of 2-star quality. It contains a few minerals, some trace elements and only small quantities of dissolved carbons, but again as drinking water it is not very high grade.

SURFACE WATER
Surface water - dams, reservoirs, etc. - contains some minerals and salts accumulated by contact with the soil and also from the atmosphere but, generally speaking it is not a very good quality water, partly because of atmospheric exposure to heavy oxygenation and to heat exposure from the Sun. The Sun's heat removes a great deal of the character and energy of water.

GROUNDWATER
Groundwater is already much better, often expressing itself as a seepage-spring, which is water emanating from lower levels and which seeps out at the surface after passage along the top of an impervious stratum. It has a larger quota of dissolved carbons, which are the most important ingredient in high quality water, apart from other trace salts.

TRUE SPRING WATER
True springwater, and we shall explore the differences between a seepage spring and a true spring later on , is very high in dissolved carbons and minerals, and of the highest possible quality. Its high state of health and vitality is affirmed by its shimmering, vibrant bluish colour, which is not evident in inferior waters. Such water is ideal for drinking, if it can be obtained. Unfortunately there are now very few true, high-quality springs left, due to the destruction of the environment.

Apart from the above water's there are artesian waters obtained from bores, which are of unpredictable quality. At times they may be saline and at others, brackish, or fresh. One can never be sure that bore-water will necessarily be of drinking quality. Well-water would probably lie between ground-water and seepage-spring water, but most probably can be likened and classified as groundwater. Once again it depends on how deep the well is and what stratum of water is tapped.

But what are we actually given to drink? This subject of vital interest to us all, which so intimately affects our life, health and well-being, will be discussed in a later chapter, because we must now turn our attention to the temperature gradient which, after the anomaly point of +40C, is the next most important factor in the understanding of water and its proper, natural handling.

The Temperature Gradient
Apart from other factors (some cannot be defined quantitatively), encompassing such aspects as turbidity (opaqueness), impurity, and quality, the most crucial factor affecting the health and energy of water is temperature, the various aspects of which will be addressed in greater detail later, but first of all a general overview is in order.

Conceived in the cool, dark cradle of the virgin forest, water ripens and matures as it slowly mounts from the depths. On its upward way it gathers to itself trace elements and minerals. Only when it is ripe, and not before, will it emerge from the bowels of the Earth as a spring. As a true spring, in contrast to a seepage spring, this has a water temperature of about +40C (39.20F). Here in the cool, diffused light of the forest it begins its long, life-giving cycle as a sparkling lively, translucent stream, bubbling, gurgling, whirling and gyrating as it wends its way valleywards. In its natural, self-cooling, spiraling, convoluting motion, water is able to maintain its vital inner energies, health and purity. In this way it acts as the conveyor of all the necessary minerals, trace elements and other subtle energies to the surrounding environment.

Naturally flowing water seeks to flow in darkness or in the diffused light of the forest, thus avoiding the damaging direct light of the Sun. Under these conditions, even when cascading down in torrents, a stream will only rarely overflow its banks. Due to its correct natural motion, the faster it flows, the greater its carrying capacity and scouring ability and the more it deepens its bed. This is due to the formation of in-winding, longitudinal, clockwise-anti-clockwise alternating spiral vortices down the central axis of the current, which constantly cool and re-cool the water, maintaining it at a healthy temperature and leading to a faster, more laminar, spiral flow.

To protect itself from harmful effects of excess heat, water shields itself from the Sun with over-hanging vegetation, for with increasing heat and light it begins to lose its vitality and health, its capacity to enliven and animate the environment through which it passes. Ultimately becoming a broad river, the water becomes more turbid, the content of suspended small-grain sediment and silt increasing as it warms up, its flow becoming slower and more sluggish.

However, even this turbidity plays an important role, because it protects the deeper water-strata from the heating effect of the Sun. Being in a denser state, the colder bottom-strata retain the power to shift sediment of larger grain-size (pebbles, gravel, etc.) from the centre of the watercourse. In this way the danger of flooding is reduced to a minimum. The spiral, vortical motion mentioned earlier, which eventually led Viktor Schauberger to the formation of his theories concerning 'implosion', creates the conditions where the germination of harmful bacteria is inhibited and the water remains disease-free.

The omission of temperature in the form of the 'temperature gradient' in all hydraulic calculation has resulted in the most devastating floods and the ruination of almost all waterways. While flow velocity, shear force (sweeping force,) sediment load, turbidity, viscosity, to name a few, are taken into account in numerous formulate, the temperature gradient, which significantly affects the function of all these different factors, has so far been totally disregarded in the fields of river engineering, water supply, water resources management and the condition of water generally.

Apart from variations in its content of organic matter, minerals and salts, the so-called 'impurities', water has always been deemed a lifeless a inorganic substance. Therefore, except for certain defined water-temperatures required for specific purposes, cooling, heating, etc., the temperature or variations in temperature of any given water or water-body has been considered totally immaterial to the behaviour of the water itself, since the measured range of these variations has generally been rated too small to be capable of producing any noteworthy effect. This attitude has apparently remained unchanged.

In early July 1991 I attended a symposium on river engineering at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia, for the express purpose of discovering the state of the art in hydrology with regard to water temperature. The keynote speaker was Prof, John F. Kennedy (!!), a hydraulicist of world repute, director of the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research and Hunter Rouse Professor of Hydraulics at the University of Iowa in the United States. As he spoke I sat ready with pencil and paper to record every mention of the word 'temperature'. By the end of the hour's very interesting address, in which Professor Kennedy expressed his great love of rivers, I had only one tick on my paper! Afterwards, wanting more precise data, I spoke with him for about 15 minutes, describing Viktor Schauberger's theories about water movement and temperature and the fact that in the 1930s they had had the full support of an equally world renowned hydrologist, Prof. Philipp Forchheimer, with whose work Professor Kennedy was acquainted. However, according to Kennedy, the influence of temperature on the dynamics of water flow was still considered negligible and therefore never taken into account. Having had this information straight from the horse's mouth, as it were, it is therefore to be concluded that temperature, as a factor in river engineering, is still ignored. As we shall see, however, it is precisely the small, sometimes infinitesimal variations in temperature that are crucial to the natural, healthy movement of water and optimal flow-regimes in streams.

Viktor Schauberger defines the temperature gradient, of which there are two forms, as follows:

A positive temperature gradient exists;
a) when the temperature of the water decreases and its density increases towards the anomaly point of +40C, or;
b) when the density and temperature increase from freezing and below towards +40C.
c) When ground or water temperatures are cooler than air temperatures.

A negative temperature gradient exists;

d) when the movement of temperature is away from +40C, either upwards or downwards, both of which signify a decrease in density and energy.

In fig.8.1 (p. 109) the direction of movement of these two temperature conditions are shown as two curves delineating the variations of volume and density with temperature. Here it can be seen how, with cooling, the volume decreases and the density increases, and vice versa, with heating. A movement of temperature towards the anomaly point of +40C always involves a positive temperature gradient, whereas a movement in the opposite direction is indicative of a negative temperature gradient Remember here that heat, or whatever is suspended in a given medium (air or water), always flows or is transported towards cold.

Both forms of temperature gradient are active simultaneously in Nature but, for there to be evolution instead of devolution, the positive temperature gradient must predominate. On both upward and downward paths life emerges at the intersection of these two 'temperaments' a it were, each of which has different characteristics, properties, potential and opposite directions of movement or propagation.

Whatever manifests itself as a result of the interaction of these mutually opposing essences depends on the relative proportions between them, which also determines their point of intersection. For example, if the positive temperature gradient is very powerful, then the effect of the reciprocally weaker negative temperature gradient is beneficial and promotes the outbirth into physical form of the highest quality substances. In more mathematical terms, if as seen in fig.4.6 the total effect of two dialectic opposites equals the unity, i.e. 1x1 =1, then if one of the aspects is reduced to a half, the value of the other is two.

Despite the changed characteristics and properties, the overall value of the unity 1 has not been changed, however, because ½=2 equals 1.

Conversely, if the roles and ratios are reversed and the negative temperature gradient is very dominant, then what unfolds as material substance is of inferior worth. For evolution and growth to proceed with increasing quality, vitality and health, which form is uppermost and at what level of reciprocity their interaction takes place is of absolutely crucial importance, for this not only affects the movement of water, the movement of sap in plants and he flow of blood in our veins, but also the configuration, structure and quality of the channels, ducts and vessels surrounding and guiding them, as will be seen later.

As it flows, water acts completely differently according to whichever temperature gradient is in force. In its concentrative, cooling, energizing function the +40C-approaching, positive temperature gradient has a formative effect. It is a process whereunder living systems can be built up, since in water it draws the ionised substances together into intimate and productive contact, for here the contained oxygen becomes passive and is easily bound by the cool carbones, thereby contributing beneficially to healthy growth and development. The +40C-deviating, negative temperature gradient, on the other hand, has a disintegrative, debilitative function, for with increasing warming the structure of a given body becomes more loosely knit with a commensurate loss in cohering energy. In this case, due to the rising temperatures, the oxygen become increasingly aggressive and reverses its role as co-creator and benefactor, turning into a destroyer and fosterer of diseases and pathogens.

In all waters, forests and other living organisms the temperature gradient is active in both positive and negative forms. In the natural processes of synthesis and decomposition each has its special role to play in Nature's great production, but each must enter upon the stage of life at its appointed time. The positive temperature gradient, however, like temperature Type A and biomagnetism (see p. 103), must play the principle role if evolution is to unfold creatively. Unfortunately with our myopic fixation on heat-producing and therefore destabilising, depletive technology, we have turned this sublime order upside down and are now reaping the ever more awesome fruits of our misguided labour.

Two exceptions, the frictional losses of this pipe are always far less than those of the other pipes.

14.3 The Circulation of Blood
Continuing our examination of enclosed flows we will now examine another form of flow, namely the circulation of the blood. Viktor Schauberger stated on many occasions that the heart was not pump, for it does not pump as much as 'being pumped'! In a similar vein, he also said that a bird does not fly, but is 'flown' and a fish 'is swum'. In view of the results of the Stuttgart investigation described above, this statement seems in part confirmed. Its function, in his view, was far more that of a regulator of the blood flow, and although he heart does produce spurts of blood during its contraction, it was not actually a pump.

His explanation for the Stuttgart phenomenon was that the flow of water was in resonance with the double-helical form of the pipe, stating that this also applied to blood vessels too, which were the elements responsible for the blood's circulation. While the arteries and capillaries themselves have a peristaltic, pulsatory action, there are also other factors involved, which will be examined later. This pulsation was observed by Professor Kurt Bergel of Berlin (ca.1925-30) when, after a few days of incubation to allow for small blood vessels to form around the yolk-sac, he carefully opened up a bird's egg. Upon doing so he noticed that the blood vessels surrounding the yolk-sac pulsated before they cooled off, although no heart had as yet been formed.

Professor Bergel also held the same view as Viktor Schauberger, rejecting the idea that the heart was a sort of pump whose task was to impel blood to every part of the body. Bergel maintained that this was carried out by "the millions of highly active capillaries permeating the body," and that "health and disease are primarily dependent on the faultless or disturbed activity of the capillaries."8

The actual movement of the blood, therefore, would appear to arise initially due to the processes of pulsation. In the light of the Stuttgart Investigation, however, it could be argued that the flow is enhanced by the configuration of the blood vessels themselves, whose shape and structure, recalling the discussion on new energies in chapter 3, represent the secondary effect of the immaterial energy flow that created them in the first place. In addition, the viscosity of the blood is known to decrease usefully or intentionally in inverse proportion to the diameter of the blood vessels, which also adds to its friction-free movement in the smallest vessels - the capillaries.

Two further contributing factors are also present. The first is the positive temperature gradient between the innermost parts of the body and the extremities which, as shown previously induces a movement from warm to cold areas. In this regard the vitalizing effect of a cold shower on the blood circulation is well known (stimulation and enhancement of warm-to-cold flow), whereas a long hot bath tends to produce physical lassitude (reduction of differences between internal and external temperatures). The second is the result of the difference in the physico-chemical composition and therefore the energetic characteristics of arterial and venal blood.

This qualitative difference is partly due to the developing physical vacuity (and therefore suction) created by the progressive absorption of positively-charged oxygen carried by the arterial blood, which increases towards the extremities (skin and hair replacement, wound repair, etc.), where the absorption is greatest, and partly due to the rising desire for the reabsorption of oxygen in the lungs by the negatively-charged, carbone-rich venal blood. Since these two types of blood carry opposite charges, the muscular contraction and closing action of the heart is therefore triggered through the periodic equalization of positive and negative charges, which reach a maximum in the venal and arterial chambers of the heart itself, due to the large charge-carrying volume of both.

The hallmark of all life-processes is pulsation and, rather than acting as a pump, the vital function of the heart is therefore to promote a pulsation in the flow. Following from the above it can also be stated with a large degree of certainty that we breathe not because the heart 'pumps', but that the heart 'pumps' because we breathe (intake of positively charged oxygen and expulsion of negatively charged CO2 and water).

In the case of a growing foetus, however, which does not breathe as we do (its blood being oxygenated via the placenta), the heart may actually behave like a pump, reinforcing the action of the pulsating blood vessels until the moment of birth. Since the movement of blood is conditioned in part by differences in internal and external temperature, prior to this event the normal temperature-induced component of blood flow would be rendered virtually inoperative, due to the minimal temperature variations within the insulating amniotic fluid of the womb. Therefore during pregnancy a 'pump' might well be a necessary auxiliary. Once birth has occurred, the first vital breath taken and the infant's body exposed to larger variations in temperature, then the heart assumes its proper function of pulsator and flow regulator. But if the heart actually is a pump, as presently claimed in medical circles, then what force must it apply to carry out his vital task?

A while ago I happened upon an article by Dr. Ernst O. Attinger entitled "Hydrodynamics of blood Flow"9 in which was described the blood circulation of a 13kg dog. The upper diagram in fig.14.10 depicts the general organisation of the cardiovascular system, where the venal beds are shown in black, whereas the lower stepped diagram provides data concerning the various vascular beds (the different types of blood vessel) of a 13kg dog, listing the values of the viscous resistance, length of branches, volume of flow, diameter, etc, of the different categories of blood vessel. When I calculated the total length of all the branches in each segment of the 13kg dog's vascular tree, I found that the total overall length of all the blood vessels in the system amounted to 1444,017,280 centimetres or 1,440.173km! On a pro rata basis, this would mean that the human body, averagely 5.5 times the size of the dog by weight, i.e. 71.5kg, would contain at least 7,920km of blood vessels! Data from other sources on the other hand places this at 60,000 miles or 96,500km10.

In recent correspondence with Dr. Attinger about his paper, the average value of the viscous resistance to be overcome by the dog's heart in order to move the blood, amounts to 5,332 dyne sec/cm-5, which is equal to a force of 0.005437kg or about 51/2 grams (1 dyne =1.0197x10-6kg), the average flow velocity in the capillaries being considerably less than 1cm/sec.

According to Walter Schauberger the output of the human heart amounts to 0.003 horsepower but, wanting further confirmation, I made enquiries at the University of Queensland and was told that it functions at about 1.5 watts. With this small amount of energy, equivalent to the average torch battery, 1/10th of a litre of blood is delivered to the arterial network about 75 times a minute or100,000 times a day. Over an average lifetime at roughly 8,000 litres per day, 175 million litres of blood pass through the heart.

Presumably this dog's heart functioned with some what less energy due to its smaller size. It therefore seems almost inconceivable that the relatively small heart of this 13kg dog would have sufficient power to force the blood through 1,440km of blood vessels, which in the light of the above does seem to be a Herculean task. The power of the heart, therefore, would appear phenomenal for its size and, according to Walter Schauberger's research in this area, it has been determined that the work of the human heart would be enough to raise a weight of about 40 tonnes per year to a height of 1m. I have also carried out my own calculations, and the figure I arrived at was 4,296.78 tonnes11.

Apart from the reduction in blood viscosity with the decrease in the size of the blood vessels, if as has been suggested earlier, energy creates the vessel most conducive to its desired form of movement in a given situation, then the pulsating, almost frictionless flow of blood over these enormous distances becomes more understandable. The factor omitted in all scientific calculation in hydrodynamics, however, or any other energetic process for that matter, is the natural desire for energy to move frictionlessly in healthy, animate, organic systems.

In the light of this research, of the description of double-spiral pipes, the Stuttgart investigation and the circulation of blood, it can be see that Viktor Schauberger's theories have been thoroughly vindicated. Perhaps, therefore, their description here will provide the basis for more productive investigative research and practical application, which is most urgently needed if we are to emerge from our present ecological and environmental crisis.

HEART PERFORMANCE CALCULATIONS
The quantity of blood moved per beat = 0.1 litres
=100cc

Since blood consists of about 90% water and 1cc of water weight 1 gram(g), assuming that the remaining blood constituents have the same specific weight as water, then the weight of blood moved by the heart per beat = 1.09g x 100cc
= 109g
= 0.109 kg

At averagely 75 beats per minute the weight of blood moved per minute = 75 x 0.109kg
= 8.175kg

… the weight of blood moved in 1 hour = 8.175kg x 60 minutes
= 490.5kg
= 0.4905 tonnes (t)

… the weight of blood moved in 24 hrs = 0.4905t x 24 hrs
= 11.772

… the weight of blood moved in 1 year = 11.772t x 365 days
= 4,296.78t.

The magnitude of a force is normally calculated in newtons. 1 newton (N) represents a force of 0.101972kg acting through a distance of 1 metre. 1 newton is also equal to an expenditure of energy of 1 joule or 1 watt per second. Therefore calculated in terms of newtons, it could be inferred that the heart expends sufficient energy annually to raise the above weight of 4,296.78 tonnes to a height of 1 metre.

As far as the energy of the heart is concerned, using the above figures, at 0.109kg per heartbeat energy required per heartbeat = 0.109kg/N (N = 0.101972 kg)
= 1.06892088N
= 1.06892088 joules
= 1.06892088 watts/second

The heart would therefore appear to function at 1.07 watts/second.

Animal experiments: illogical, unscientific and pointless

As I have already pointed out, one of the key techniques used by pharmaceutical companies to get new products onto the market is to perform initial trials on animals other than human beings. Animal experiments offer drug companies an enormous advantage: if an experiments shows that a drug does not harm a particular animal, then that experiment can be used to help the drug onto the market. The company will suggest that the absence of any serious problems when the drug was given to an animal shows that the drug was given to an animal shows that the drug will probably be safe when given to human patients.

But, on the other hand, if an experiment shows that a drug causes serious problems when given to an animal, the results will be dismissed on the grounds that animal experiments cannot be regarded as relevant to human beings because of the enormous anatomical and physiological differences between, on the one hand, human beings and on the other hand, cats, dogs, monkeys, rabbits, rats, mice and other creatures.

Many outside observers who do not fully comprehend the depths of dishonesty to which the drug industry will stoop find it difficult to believe that anyone could get away with such blatant double-edged trickery. In this chapter I will prove that this is exactly how drug companies operate.

It is DIFFICULT to understand how any medical scientist can possible defend the use of animal experiments as part of a drug testing programme. The usefulness and reliability of animal experiments has been so devalued in recent years that I do not believe that any reputable, independent scientist could possibly attempt to defend the use of animal experiments on logical, scientific grounds.

Those who perform and support animal experiments are so embarrassed and ashamed of what they do that they frequently use euphemisms to disguise their activities. It is quite common, for example, for experimenters to talk of animals 'taking part' in experiments and 'helping us with our research'. The word 'experiment' has been replaced by the word 'procedure' which is less evocative. Experimenters have their own language. Here are just a few choice phrases they use (and their meanings):
vocal response = crying
major airway embarrassment = choking
reacting to adverse stimulation with vigorous motor responses = trying to escape
binocular deprivation = sewing the eyes up
decapitation = head removal
exhibiting lethal behaviour = dying
startle reflex = flinching aversive electrical stimulation = electric shocks
thermal injury = burn or scald

In unguarded moments even the medical establishment acknowledges that animal experiments are absurdly unreliable. The British Medical Association is, as one would expect it to be, a staunch supporter of animal experimentation. But this stance becomes difficult to understand when one studies the British Medical Association's book, The BMA Guide to Living With Risk (first published in 1987), in which readers are told that 'if salt and sugar were being tested as potential food additives today, and if judgement of acceptability was to be based purely on the laboratory and animal testing, it is difficult to imagine a simpler or more damning indictment of animal experimentation than to admit that animal experiments are so unreliable that neither salt nor sugar (just two of many other commonly consumed substances which are known to cause serious problems when given to other members of the animal kingdom) would pass safety tests if animal tests were relied upon!

Incidentally, many other powerful and important substances - such as the heart drug digoxin and the pain killer morphine - would have failed animal experiment tests and would not therefore be available to us now if the vivisectors had been listened to. Heaven only knows how many other valuable drugs have been lost to medicine because animal experiments falsely suggested that they were highly toxic to human patients.

In recent years an increasing number of medical journals have published skeptical or revealing comments. I am grateful to Jill Russell DCR for helping to compile this list of examples.

'The discipline [clinical pharmacology] first evolved from the recognition that studies in rats do not give doctors enough information about the way drugs really behave in the human body.' Hospital Doctor, May 1993.

'Doctor wanting to defend Britain's 3.2 million scientific procedures on living animals will want to know much more about what they are defending than this book (Statistics of Scientific Procedures on Living Animals) tells them. It's impossible to answer such simple questions as how many procedures are accounted for by the search for new drugs and to which pharmacological groups they belong. (Doctors may find it difficult to muster much enthusiasm for the nth beta blocker or the n+1th non steroidal anti inflammatory drug.) We're not told how many purely psychological studies were performed, although there is the tantalising detail that for 11,100 procedure. (Why? What was learnt, from frightening rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and fish?) 'British Medical Journal, 'The Week' column, September 1991.

'Despite the fact that nearly all analgesics are tested on animals prior to their use in man very little is known about the effects of clinical doses of analgesics on physiology and behaviour in normal rodents.' Laboratory Animals, 1992.

'Science the results of these animal studies were inconsistent, it seemed that the only way to discover more about the cellular events in new bone was to study the process in man.' The Lancer, 1992.

'Experimental models are far removed from clinical reality…' Scientific American, 1987.

'Despite the claims of the animal modelers, their studies have largely been irrelevant to psychiatric problems or have lent token support to human studies… The enormous field of mother-infant separation and deprivation research in animals does not contain a single study that had a discernible clinical impact… The research did reveal marked variation within and between species that casts considerable doubt on extrapolations to human studies.' The Veterinary Record, 1986.

'The predictive value for man of toxicological testing in animals is open to question,' Prescribers' Journal, 1991.

'…we currently are unable to assess clinical pain objectively and reliably in animals.' Laboratory Animals, 1992.

LAWYERS WHO HAVE studied the evidence for and against the use of animal experiments have been convinced by the argument that animal experiments are so unreliable as to be useless. Consider this quote from the Idaho Law Review:

Animal studies have no place in the courtroom. They suffer from inherent and incurable defects that make them entirely unreliable as proof of human response to toxic substances. They fail to account for astonishing differences between animal species and humans; indeed they fail to account for large differences in test results that occur within individual animal species. They rest on unproven assumptions that humans and animals will respond similarly to the same substances and that large doses administered under experimental conditions can be reliably translated into lower doses more commonly encountered in the real world.

MOST CONVINCING OF all, however, is the evidence from the drug companies themselves. A vast number of drugs sold for doctors to prescribe for human patients are known to cause cancer or other serious problems when given to animals. In my view, if anyone believed that animal experiments were of value then none of these drugs would be on the market.

The Imperial Cancer Research Fund, one of the largest and richest charities in Britain, is also one of the most fervent supporters of animal experiments. During 1989, 1990 and 1991 several scientific papers written about experiments involving dogs were published by scientists working for the ICRF. For one experiment 60 male beagle puppies were anaesthetised and then bled to death.

The Fund claimed that the dog experiments were done because there were fears that a drug might cause problems in people. They told me that 'the FDA requested investigations of the mechanisms of hyperplasia associated with high doses of misoprostol'.

One of the paper published by the ICRF scientists ended: 'In conclusion, misoprostol effectively elicits a hyperplastic response in the gastric mucosa…'. The drug company making misoprostol told doctor: Cytotec (misoprostol) in multiples of the recommended therapeutic dose in animals has produced gastric mucosal hyperplasia… In patients, histological examination of the gastric biopsies taken before and treatment with misoprostol after up to one year's duration have shown no adverse tissue response attributable to misoprostol.' In other words the scientists from the ICRF showed that the drug produced hyperplasia in dogs but the drug company still sold the drug for human use and stated that human patients did not respond in the same way. The authorities are clearly happy that the drug is safe for human use.

This was not, however, an isolated example of a drug causing a problem in animals but then still being held to be safe for use by human patients.

The information which follows was taken from the individual data sheets produced by the relevant drug companies. I have included this huge number of drugs because it is the very quantity of drugs o the market-despite the fact that these products are known to cause serious or potentially serious problems in animals-which is of significance (though I do stress that this list is by no means comprehensive). Many of these drugs are extremely popular and are prescribed for millions of patients around the world. It is impossible to obtain precise figures for the number of patients involved because of the secrecy laws.

Bankruptcy, but when surgeons can pop into their nearest supermarket and pick out a hybrid heart 'Ready for Use: From the Freezer to the Chest Cavity' we're going to have big problems.

Animal organ transplants could be used to save several hundred thousand lives a year. The total bill could easily mean that in Britain the rest of the NHS will have to close down. Or taxes will have to go up to 1.78 in the 1 to pay for it all.

Has anyone else stopped to think all this through?

Fourth, when are things going to go seriously, horrifyingly, frighteningly, blood chillingly wrong? When men in white coats say that everything is foolproof and nothing can go wrong. I get this funny tingling feeling down my spine. Things will go wrong. Believe me. Things will go wrong. Remember: one in six patients in hospital are already there because doctors and medical scientists have screwed up.

Fifth, what about the enormous religious and cultural problems all this is going to create? If you try flying into the Middle East with a pigskin belt holding your trousers up you're likely to be deported and have your belt confiscated. What happens if you've got a pig's heart pumping away in your chest? ('I'm sorry, sir, we'll have to confiscate the heart but you'll be free to leave the country afterwards.')

It makes me go cold inside. Are we all really this desperate to live for ever?

ANIMAL EXPERIMENTS MUST STOP
Although the evidence showing that animal experiments are worse than worthless is overwhelming, animal experimentation retains a considerable amount of powerful support. The establishment tends to support vivisection. Politicians, civil servants and journalists who have not studied the subject in any depth assume that animal experiments must be necessary because that is what they are told by the medical establishment.

The establishment is wary of the anti-vivisection argument because it has been encouraged to believe that those who favour it are simply cranks-fired by an over zealous enthusiasm for the welfare of animals and a failure to understand the requirements of science. The image of the anti-vivisection movement has been deliberately clouded of not being a qualified doctor. I have been accused of having links with terrorists. I have received threats to my life. My files have been burgled. My telephone has been tapped (and simply switched off during attempts to broadcast).

The doctors who make up the medical establishment support the use of animal experiments because they, in turn, have been told that they are essential for the development of new drugs. They are told this by the big international drug companies.

The truth is that those who support animal experimentation are quite clearly wrong. When individuals who support animal experimentation are given the facts, they cannot defend their position. Animal experiments are so unreliable that it is possible to prove anything by doing them-one just has to select the results carefully. It is no more possible to support animal experimentation in logical argument than it would be to support slavery or to oppose the emancipation of women. If vivisection were stopped tomorrow it would never be introduced again because no one would ever be able to find an argument supporting its introduction.

Animal experiments are so barbaric and so unsupportable on moral, ethical, scientific or medical grounds that once they are stopped no one will ever dream of letting them start again.

However, the battle against vivisection (which should be fought by those who care for the safety of human patients as well as animals) must be fought not just against waves of prejudice but also against apparently endless seas of ignorance and indifference. Confused and frightened by the pro-vivisection campaigns (which I regard as the crudest and most vicious form of intellectual terrorism ever seen-usually being dependent on the 'if we stop animal experiments then children will die' argument) ordinary members of the public do nothing. It is their money which is used for most animal experiments. The experiments are done in their name but they remain silent.

Most experiments are done or paid for by pharmaceutical companies. It is the drug industry (which, as I have shown, depends on animal experiments for its healthy profits) which persuades politicians and journalists that animal experiments are essential. It is the drug industry which gives animal experimentation a veneer of credibility and respectability. And it is, therefore, the drug industry that we should be aiming at as we battle to stop animal experiments.

Some politicians who support the anti-vivisection campaign insist that we should aim for a pan-European ban on the grounds that a single country ban would be impractical. It would only be impractical for the drug industry. Can you imagine the chaos that would exist if the industry had to produce drugs that had been tested on animals, just for one country? A single country ban would quite quickly lead to a universal ban. If, for example, Britain or Germany announced that it was no longer going to allow the sale of drugs which had been tested on animals, then animal testing would stop very quickly. The drug companies wouldn't move their testing procedures to Russia or Africa (as the politicians now claim they will if we force them out of our countries) because there wouldn't be any point in doing any animal experiments if by so doing they adversely affect their own sales.

Animal experiments will never be stopped by waiting for the legislators to take action, because the drug companies control the legislators. Animal experiments will be stopped by public opinion forcing politicians to take action (in just the same way that public opinion has led the way to all other great social changes). Modern politicians do not lead-they simply follow public opinion.

The drug companies will continue to argue that animal experiments help doctors save lives. This book has, I believe, shown that that claim is a lie. The money spent on animal experimentation is money wasted. The number of patients now being injured by badly tested drugs is so great that iatrogenesis is one of the commonest causes of serious ill health in the western world. If the money spent on animal testing were spent on proper clinical trials (not to mention preventive medicine programmes) then far more lives would be saved. The pharmaceutical industry, which is marketing led rather than being led by patients' requirements, has no interest in patient welfare. The principles upon which the industry is based mean that patients inevitably suffer.

Animal experimentation is done with a false mantle of science by men and women who claim to be educated and civilized. It is based on lies and ruthlessly used to make money. A side effect is that millions of patients are made ill. Those who perform and support animal experimentation have betrayed us all.

Animals can help doctors save human patients.

But not through experiments.

MANY VERTEBRATES-INCLUDING monkeys, pigs and elephants-use plants as medicines as well as food. Sick animals seek out and eat plants which they know will help them; they eat some plants, they hold others in their mouths (we call it buccal absorption) and they rub yet others onto their skin (we call that topical application).

Ethiopian baboons who are at risk of developing schistosomiasis eat balanites fruits, which are rich in a potent antischistosome drug. Chimpanzees in Tanzania use a herb which has a powerful antifungal, antibacterial and antinematode activity. If they just ate the herb it wouldn't work because the valuable compound would be destroyed by stomach acidity. So they hold the leaf in their mouths in the same way that angina patients are encouraged to hold glyceryl trinitrate in their mouths to expedite absorption. Kodiak bears apply a drug topically which helps to kill parasites. They scratch the root into their fur. European starlings combat parasitisation to their nests by fumigating incubating eggs. Lethargic chimps with diarrhoea treat themselves with vernonia. Howler monkeys use herbal medicines to control birth spacing and to determine the sex of their offspring. Koala bears use different types of eucalyptus to vary their body temperature. Sloth bears get drunk through eating fermenting madhuca flowers.

We can learn an enormous amount by watching other animals. But instead of watching these animals the men in white coats cage them, stick electrodes into their heads, sit them in metal boxes for weeks at a time to make them depressed, separate them from their families, sew up their eyes, and inject chemicals into their brains while they are awake.

Ina generation or so our descendants will look back at the vivisectors and wonder not just at the sort of people they were, but at the sort of people we were to let them do what they did.

Animal experiments must stop. And they must stop now. For your sake; for your childrens' sake; for the sake of the animals the vivisectors kill.

The Gift of Love

By Joel Goldsmith

Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.

Illumination dissolves all material ties and binds men together with the golden chains of spiritual understanding; it acknowledges only the leadership of the Christ; it has no ritual or rule but the divine, impersonal universal Love; no other worship than the inner Flame that is ever lit at the shrine of Spirit. This union is the free state of spiritual brother-hood. The only restraint is the discipline of Soul, therefore we know liberty without license; we are a united universe without physical limits; a divine service to God without ceremony or creed. The illumined walk without fear-by Grace.

-THE INFINITE WAY

There is no need to run outside
For better seeing,
Nor to peer from a window. Rather abide
At the centre of your being;
For the more you leave it, the less you learn.

LAO-TZE

Truth is within ourselves.
There is an inmost centre in us all,
Where the Truth abides in fullness; and to know
Rather consists in opening out a way
Whence the imprisoned splendour may escape
Than in effecting entry for a light
Supposed to be without.

ROBERT BROWNING

A God has made His abode within our breast: when He rouses us, the glow of inspiration warms us; this holy rapture springs from the seeds of the divine mind sown in man.

Most men take a problem, not to themselves, not into the chambers of their own minds, but to the first directory of persons whom they can consult.

VALDIVARA

The kingdom of God is within you.

JESUS

Modern man continually seeks freedom from the fears, anxieties and dangers of material living. In looking for help, sustenance or explanation Christian, Eastern or Mystical faiths have been explored. Often their answers have remained apart from daily life,' out there', resulting in a fatal dualism. The material and spiritual planes appear equally real but without understandable relation to each other. Joel Goldsmith shows in this book that the answers must be sought within. Inner peace will result from turning to the spiritual consciousness of life and outer calm will follow in everyday affairs. The outer world will conform to the inner awareness of Truth.

LOVE AS UNDERSTANDING
We all want to be understood and to be understanding. Most of us wish that those we meet could se into the center of our being, could se what we have been from the beginning, but which no one has yet recognized-not mother, not father, not teacher. No one has ever seen what we really are, and it is because of this nonrecognition that we have worn a mask to hide ourselves from the world. If only the mask that is hiding you from me and me from you could drop from our faces, we would be like children, back in the Garden of Eden.

Everyone longs to be understood, but most persons think that that means being known as they are humanly. That is not what it means at all. Those who believe that do so because they do not yet know that the Christ is their true identity and this is really what they would like to show forth.

The Master Christ Jesus, too longed to have his true identity recognized and understood. How obvious is his longing as he asks, "Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?…Whom say ye that I am?" He longed to be known as the Christ but he could not walk out and say, "I am the Christ."

Let us not hesitate, however, so say silently to everyone wee meet, "Thou art the Christ, the holy one of Israel. I know thee who thou art." How do we know it? Flesh and blood have not taught us this, nor has the human mind revealed it. Only spiritual discernment reveals to us that God lives on earth as individual you and me. God has incarnated Himself as individual being. God the Father appears on earth as God the son.

As we begin the practice of beholding the Christ in everyone we meet - in our household, our neighborhood, the market, the post office, the department store - the world will begin to present a different picture to us. People will act in a different way. The world will respond differently to us because the world will bring to us what we have given to it.

Whomever we meet, we meet in the spirit of letting God's grace flow a living spirit. This does not necessarily imply giving of our personal possessions or giving of our time and effort, although some of that may be involved also. The greater giving is the recognition of the true identity of those we meet: "I know thee who thou art, the holy one of Israel."

Everyone is the holy one of Israel. Everyone saint and every devil is that holy one. Every healthy person, every diseased person, every pure person, every sinning person is the holy one of Israel, God incarnate although temporarily acting out the part of the Prodigal Son, or the branch of a tree that is cut off.

To enrich our own life we must learn to give recognition to the true identity of those we meet. The person we meet today is presenting his Christhood for identification. He thinks he is presenting a sick body to be healed, a disturbed mind to be set at peace, an empty purse to be filled, or morals to be cleansed. But we know better.

We do not claim that a person's human form and characteristics are the Christ. No person in his human identity is spiritual, perfect, healthy, or wealthy. But we disregard the appearance of his humanhood and through spiritual discernment behold the Christ looking out of his eyes silently, sacredly, secretly.

We see him from the mystical standpoint after the manner of the Christ, knowing that whoever he is, he is presenting his Christhood for our acknowledgment. We may be faced with a gambler, a prostitute, a sick or a dying person, but always he is presenting his Christhood to us for recognition and identification.

Every time some person comes to us trying to convince us that he has a sick body, an empty purse, or is living a sinful life, we learn not to try to change the evil into good, not to pray that God take away the negative appearance and restore the positive. Rather we ignore the appearance, look right through it, and see that behind the eyes of every individual is the Christ.

That is what Jesus saw when he looked into the eyes of the woman taken in adultery. He saw her begging and pleading to be known as she really was not as she appeared to be. The thief on the cross was begging to be recognized: "Look, I am a thief; I did steal, but you know it was only because I thought I needed something. You know who I am; you know what I am."

And the Master looked right into his eyes, "I will take you, not your body, but you whom I see behind the eyes, I will take that right into paradise with me this moment - not after punishment, no this moment. If your sins are scarlet, you are white as snow."

Are we white as snow? No, not our humanhood that has sinned. But as the holy one of Israel, I* have never sinned. I is the Christ of God; I is God incarnate as individual being. As we behold that Christ in any person, in some measure at least he is healed of his humanhood and of all finite limitation, and as he beholds that in us, we , too, are lifted up.

Enter into the sanctuary of your own being, and there in silence and secrecy behold the true identity of friend or foe. Lift up the son of God in him to your level, knowing that the Christ of him is the Christ of you.

*I, italicized, refers to God.

LIVING BY LOVE
To be obedient to the law of love brings us into kingdom of God. But what does that obedience entail? It is a service to God through service to man. It is being obedient to the command to pray for our enemies, to forgive those who persecute or otherwise ill-treat us. No one can serve God except in loving service to man because there is no God separate and apart from man. All the God there is, is made manifest on earth as man, and inasmuch as we do that service unto man, we do it unto God. Believing that we can serve God and ignore man is blindness.

The only truly spiritual life possible is lived by keeping our thoughts and deeds in at one-ment with the law of love - not a sentimental, emotional kind of love, not a nonsensical, wishy-washy kind of love. It must be the love that does unto others as we would have is to real love.

The only trouble is that love has been confused with sentiment. People have become all worked up into a state of emotionalism, believing that emotionalism has something to do with love while all the time they were not fulfilling the terms of love.

Love is not a sentimental attachment to mankind: love is a law; love is a mode of conduct, an attitude. Love does not come to us. Love is within ourselves, and we must open out a way for it to escape by fulfilling the commands of the Master. Love is something that we let flow out from us, just as we open a way for truth to flow out from us.

It is we ourselves, however, who must know whether or not we are functioning through love. At this point egotism and conceit could come in and cheat us by developing within us a pharisaical self-righteousness. We have to be careful that we do not get the idea that we, of ourselves, are loving. We must realize that it is the love of God that enables us to be loving, God's love, not our love, and not even our love for God.

Instead let us think of it as God's love for us: "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son" - to each one of us individually. At the very center of our being God has incarnated Himself in us as His son. God the Father has placed Himself as God the Son in the midst of us. That means every person who has ever existed science the beginning of time or who ever will exist. Every person has the seed of Goodhood at his center. God so loved mankind that He placed Himself in the midst of mankind. He placed the individual expression of Himself at the center of us and He named that center I. He named Himself I, and every time the word I comes to our consciousness we should realize that the presence of God is there.

We have to maintain ourselves consciously in the awareness that the son of God is in us and Its law is love. We are in attunement with It when we are forgiving "seventy times seven," when we are sharing, giving, bestowing.

The law of God is forgiveness and doing unto others as we would have others do unto us. We are violating the law of love the moment we desire revenge, indulge in resentment, or ascribe wrong motives to anyone. Every person is in attunement with the law of law when he is living according to his highest light of doing unto others as he would have others do unto him.

"Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me," for the only "me" there is, is man; the only God there is, is the incarnation of Himself in man. When we are serving and recognizing the God in man, we are serving and recognizing the only true God.

Spiritual Illumination
Spiritual illumination enables us to discern the spiritual reality where the human concept appears to be. Spiritual sense discerns the reality of that which is appearing as concept.

The development of spiritual consciousness begins with our first realisation that what we are beholding through the senses of sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell is not the reality of things. Disregarding appearances entirely, the first ray of spiritual illumination brings us hints of the divine, the eternal and immortal. This in turn makes the appearance even less real to us, thereby admitting even greater illumination.

Our progress Spiritward is in proportion to the illumination which enables us to behold more and more of Reality. Because the human sense is entirely a misconception through misperception, any thought of helping, healing, correcting, or changing the material picture must be relinquished in order that we may see the ever-present Reality.

Spiritual illumination comes to us in a measure with our first investigation of truth. We believe that we are seeking good, or truth; whereas the light has begun to shine in our consciousness compelling us to take the steps we have since taken. Every increase of our spiritual understanding was more light appearing and dispelling the darkness of sense. This inflow of illumination will continue until we come to the full realisation of our true identity as 'the light of the world'. Without illumination, we struggle with the forces of the world; we labour for a living; we struggle to maintain our place and position; we complete for riches or honours. Often we war with our own friends and even find ourselves at war with ourselves. There is no security in personal possessions even after the battle to acquire them has been won.

Illumination first brings peace, then confidence and assurance; it brings rest from the world's contests, and then all good flows to us through Grace. We see now that we do not live by acquiring, gaining, or achieving. We live by Grace; we possess all as the gift of God; we do not get our good because we already have all good. 'Son thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.'

The pleasures and successes of the world are as nothing compared with the joys and treasures which now unfold to us through spiritual sense. In the light of truth, the greatest earthly happiness and triumph are as nothing, whereas the treasures of Soul have a glory unknown and unfathomed by sense.

Possessing the divine light within him, man gains his freedom from the world and security from all earthly or human dangers. This period holds terrors and fears for many. The spiritually illumined will recognise that because no good can come or go, that because spiritual activity is always of the nature of fulfillment, that because their illumination has revealed the reality of things, they are anchored in Soul, in God-consciousness, in spiritual peace, security, and serenity.

We will fear no change in the outer picture because the outer is but the reflection of the allness within. Safe in the realisation that we are individual through infinite spiritual consciousness embodying all good, we need give no consideration to the evidence of the senses.

Spiritual illumination reveals the harmony of being and dispels the evidence of material sense. It does not change anything in the universe for this is a spiritual universe peopled with children of God, but the illumination changes our concept of the universe.

This is but the beginning of this vast subject, and while we are discussing it, let us keep thought removed as far as possible from the world of sense and anchored in the conscious awareness of spiritual reality.

Always there have appeared men bearing the divine message of the presence of God and of the unreality of evil : Buddha of India; Lao-Tze of China; Jesus of Nazareth. These and many others brought the light of Truth to men, and always men have interpreted this light as the messenger, failing to see that what they were beholding as a man 'out there' was the light of Truth within their own consciousness.

In worshipping Jesus, men lost the Christ. In devotion to Jesus, men failed to apprehend the Christ. In seeking good through Jesus, men failed to find the omnipresent Christ in their own consciousness.

In every case, the messenger appearing to man is the advent of the Christ in individual consciousness, and when so understood, freedom from personal sense and personal limitation has been attained.

Jesus said, 'If I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you'. Was this not clear enough for all to understand? If you do not look away from the personal sense of salvation, mediation, and guidance, you will not find the great Light within your own consciousness.

Spiritual illumination does not come from a person, but from the impersonal Christ, the universal Truth, the illumined consciousness of your Self.

Illumined consciousness dispels the personal sense of self with its problems, ills, age, and failures. It reveals the real Self, the I that I am, unlimited, unfettered, untroubled, harmonious, and free. This Selfhood is revealed as we retire within ourselves each day and there learn to 'listen' and to watch. Likewise, instead of anxious care about the work of the day or the events of the future, we let the Soul, or our divine Spirit, go ahead of us to smooth and prepare the way; we let this divine Influence remain behind us to safeguard every step from illusions of sense.

Illumined consciousness always knows that there is an infinite, all-powerful Presence prospering every act and blessing every thought. It knows that all who touch us on life's highway must feel the benediction of our thought.

When consciousness is afire with Truth and Love, it destroys all sense of fear, doubt, hate, envy, disease, and discord - and this pure consciousness is felt by all whom we meet, and it lightens the load they carry. It is impossible to be 'the light of the world' and not dispel the darkness of those about us.

Realise that all the good you experience is the shining forth of your own consciousness even when it appears to come from, or through, some other individual. Recognise every evil appearance as a false perception of harmony and therefore not to be feared or hated, and this will result in the disappearance of the illusion and the showing forth of reality. Only illumined consciousness can look upon an evil appearance and perceive the divine reality. Only the Christ in consciousness can strip error of its seeming reality and rob it of its sting.

Spiritual illumination reveals that we are not mortals - not even human beings - but that we are pure spiritual being, divine consciousness, self-sustaining life, all-inclusive mind. This light destroys the illusions of personal sense.

Illumination dissolves all material ties and binds men together with the golden chains of spiritual understanding; it acknowledges only the leadership of the Christ; it has no ritual or rule but the divine, impersonal, universal love, no other worship than the inner flame that is ever lit at the shrine of Spirit. This union is the free state of spiritual brotherhood. The only restraint is the discipline of Soul; therefore, we know liberty without license; we are a united universe without physical limits, a divine service to God without ceremony or creed.

The illumined walk without fear - by Grace.

To know that we are the fulfillment of God, that we are that place in consciousness where God shines through, is to be spiritually minded. The realisation that every individual is the presence of God, that all that is, is God appearing, is spiritual consciousness. The understanding that what we see, hear, taste, touch, or smell through the five physical senses is but the finite concept of reality and in no wise related to the spiritually real is spiritual sense.

Christ-consciousness beholds God everywhere shining through the mist of personal sense. It recognizes no sinner to be reformed, no sick to heal, no poor to enrich. Spiritual illumination dispels the false concepts or images of finite sense and reveals all being as God appearing.

The light in individual consciousness reveals the world of God's creating, the universe of reality, the children of God. In this light, the mortal scene disappears, and the world of concepts, 'this world', gives place to 'My kingdom' - the reality of things seen as they are.

Likewise, there is always the sense of an inner companionship. We feel an inner warmth, a living presence, a divine assurance. Sometimes we feel a strong hand in ours or behold a smiling face over our shoulder. We
are never alone and we know it. This sweet Presence gives us an inner rest; It enables us to relax from the strain of the world and brings us the joy of peace. In truth, it is a 'peace, be still' to every problem or strain of human existence. It is a healing influence within us, and yet it is felt by all those about us.

This inner Presence of which we are aware is Truth itself interpreting itself to us as presence, power, companion, light, peace, and healing influence - as the Christ. The consciousness of this inner Being is the result of our greater spiritual illumination, of our cultivated spiritual consciousness. This truth is the God who healeth our diseases, and it goes ever before us to make smooth our path in life. This truth is wealth and appears as our abundant supply. No human circumstance or condition can lessen our income and wealth while we abide in this consciousness of the presence of love.

Establish this truth within you, and it becomes your real being, knowing neither birth nor death, youth nor age, health nor disease - but only the eternality of harmonious being. This truth dispels every illusion of sense and reveals the infinite harmony of your being; it dispels mortality and reveals your immortality. Whatever in your thought is unlike this divine Presence, Truth itself, must yield in order that you may drink the pure water of Life and eat the spiritual meat of Truth.

To free our hearts from the errors of self -self-will, false desires, ambition, and greed - is to reflect the light of Truth as the perfect diamond reflects its own inner light.

About 500 BC it was written: 'It easily happens that a man, when taking a bath, steps upon a wet rope and imagines that it is a snake. Horror will overcome him, and he will shake from fear, anticipating in his thought all the agonies caused by the serpent's venomous bite. What a relief does this man experience when he sees that the rope is no snake! The cause of his fright lies in his error, his ignorance, his illusion. If the true nature of the rope is recognised, his tranquility of mind will come back to him; he will feel relieved: he will be joyful and happy. This is the state of mind of one who has recognised that there is no personal self, that the cause of all his troubles, cares, and vanities is a mirage, a shadow, a dream.'

So again, illumination reveals that there is no error, that what appears as the snake - sin, disease, discord, death - is reality itself misperceived by finite sense. Then discords are not to be hated, feared, or resented, but reinterpreted until the true nature of the rope - reality - is discerned through spiritual sense. The snake - disease or discord - is merely a state of mind, with no corresponding external reality. It must be understood that no illusion is, or ever can be, externalised.

Spiritual illumination may be attained by living constantly in the consciousness of the presence of perfection, by the continual translation of the visible picture into the reality. We are being faced with discordant appearances all through our days nights, and these must immediately be translated through our understanding of the 'new tongue', the language of spirit.

Every incident of our daily experience offers fresh opportunities to use our spiritual understanding, and each use of the spiritual faculties results in greater spiritual perception, which in turn reveals more and more of the light of Truth. 'Pray without ceasing. …And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.' Translate the pictures and incidents of daily existence into the new tongue, the language of Spirit, and consciousness will expand until translation occurs without even taking thought. It becomes a habitual state of consciousness, a constant awareness of Truth.

Only in this wise can we find our lives unfolding harmoniously from the centre of our being without taking conscious thought. Instead of our existence being a continual round of 'demonstrations', it becomes the natural, harmonious, joyous unfoldment of good. Instead of repeated efforts to make good come to us, our every good unfolds to view from the depths of our own being without conscious effort, either physical or mental. We are no longer dependent on person or circumstance, nor even on our personal effort. Spiritual illumination enables us to relax our personal efforts and rely more on Divinity unfolding and revealing itself as us.

Our Real Existence
Our real existence is as Spirit, and only in the degree that we perceive our real existence as Spirit, do we drop the false sense of life as material. Then we see that the structural life of man, animal, and plant is but the false sense of existence; that our concern for the so-called necessities of material living has been unnecessary; that although the beauties we behold all hint at God's creation, they are not that spiritual and perfect creation; that the sick, aging, dying appearances are not at all a part of real life. When we arrive at this state of consciousness, we begin to catch glimpses of eternal spiritual existence, untouched by material conditions or mortal thoughts. As we turn from the world we see, hear, taste, touch, and smell, we catch inspired visions which show forth the earth of God's creating.

In healing work, we must turn from the structural universe which we see. We must remember that we are not called upon to heal it, change it, alter it, correct it, or save it. We are first of all to realise that it exists only as illusion, as the false sense of life. From this vantage point in consciousness, we behold through spiritual sense the 'house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens'.

We are apt to think of certain people as good providers, good earners, good salesmen, or good healers. Let us understand this correctly. It is never a person, but a state of consciousness, which heals, regenerates, paints, writes, or composes. The state of consciousness becomes visible to us as a person because of the finite concept we entertain of God and man. We often suffer disappointment when some people fail to live up to the picture we have formed of them. This is because we have ascribed the good qualities of consciousness to a person, and then when he fails to live up to those qualities we have erroneously believed to be the person, we suffer.

In the Bible, we meet with the characters Moses, Isaiah, Jesus, and Paul. We should realise that Moses represents the leader-state of consciousness, or leadership; Isaiah presents to us prophecy; Jesus shows forth the Messiah-consciousness, or saving and healing Grace; Paul carries the consciousness of the messenger, preacher, or teacher. Always, however, it is the particular state of consciousness expressing itself and appearing to us as men.

George Washington certainly represents the consciousness of national integrity; Abraham Lincoln, the consciousness of individual integrity and equality.

When we think of ourselves, let us forget our so-called humanhood and human qualities and try to under stand what we represent as consciousness and then realise that that consciousness which is expressing itself as us is likewise maintaining and prospering us and our endeavours

.
Failure often comes through the belief that we express God, or Life, or Intelligence; or that we express God-qualities. This is never true. God, Consciousness, is forever expressing itself and its qualities. Consciousness, Life, Spirit, can never fail. Our task is to learn to relax and let our Soul express itself. Egotism is the attempt to be or do something through either personal, physical, or mental effort. To 'take no thought' is to refrain from conscious thinking and to let divine ideas fill our consciousness. Since we are individual spiritual Consciousness, we can always trust that Consciousness to fulfil itself and its mission. We are the spectator or witness of this divine activity of Life expressing and fulfilling itself.

More and more we must become the spectator or witness. We must become the beholder of Life and its harmonies. Each morning we should awaken with eagerness to watch the new day unfolding and revealing each hour new joys and victories. Several times each day we should consciously realise that we are witnessing the revelation of Life eternal, the unfolding of Consciousness and its infinite expression, the activity of Spirit and its grand formations. In every situation of our daily experience, let us learn to stand back of ourselves and see God at work, witness the play of Love upon our affairs, and watch God reveal Himself in all those about us.

Every night we should realise that our rest does not bring to a close God's activity in our experience, but that Love is the protecting influence and substance of our rest, that Consciousness is imparting its ideas to us even in sleep, that Principle is the guiding law through-out the night. Nothing from without can enter consciousness to defile, and this truth stands guard at our mental portals to admit only reality and its harmonies.

Be a beholder, a witness. Watch the unveiling of the Christ in your consciousness.

There is a constant warfare between the flesh and the Spirit, and this will continue as long as we entertain any degree of corporeal sense. The attempt to bring Spirit and its laws to bear upon material concepts constitutes this war, and peace can only come when the structural sense of the universe and the corporeal sense of man have been overcome.

Notice how often you try to apply some metaphysical truth to a human problem and you will discover the reason for the conflict within you. Our goal actually is the attainment of spiritual harmony rather than a continuation in a material sense of existence with more ease or comfort.

In the early days of our search for truth, we probably had no other thought beyond making a sick body well, a poor person more affluent, or changing a singing man into a moral one. There is no doubt but that in turning to a practitioner or teacher of spiritual consciousness we seemed to achieve this end and for some time we continued to 'use' Truth, or God, to govern our material concept of man and the world.

It is only as we continue in our spiritual studies and meditation that we eventually become aware of an inner conflict. We enjoy moments of mountain experiences; we tumble into the valley of uncertainty; we achieve victories and then experience failure; we alternate between apparent good and evil, success and failure, spirituality and mortality, health and illness. This is the inner conflict that becomes evident as the warfare between the flesh and the Spirit. This will only end as we drop the mortal or corporeal sense and achieve the consciousness of spiritual existence.

'My kingdom is not of this world' is the foundation for the building of the new and higher consciousness. The willingness and ability to look away from the human sense of person and thing and perceive the man and universe of God's creating is essential.

Gaining more money is not spiritual supply ; greater savings do not constitute security; physical health is not necessarily foundation for eternal life: these constitute merely improved human belief.

The advancing student will gradually relinquish his attempts to improve humanhood or to improve beliefs in order that the truth of spiritual existence may unfold in his consciousness.

The spiritual realm is the source of health which truly is the eternal harmony of being ; it is a consciousness of supply without limits and is gained without taking thought. Remember, however, that we are not again connecting God, or Spirit, with the human sense of health and supply. We are rather coming into the awareness of spiritual health and supply. Heretofore, our efforts have been in the direction in our earthly affairs. That this consciousness of heavenly being seems to result in more harmonious human living is true, but these are the 'added things' which follow the seeking of heaven and its righteousness. The heavenly sense of righteousness will be found to be far different from the human concept of goodness, and it is this higher sense of good we should seek.

'My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways'. For this reason we are not attempting to think more or better human thoughts, nor to have our human ways made more smooth. We truly are seeking to learn God's thoughts and God's ways.

At this state of unfoldment, we realise the need of dropping all concern for ourselves and for our own welfare. We are learning that concern for our personal welfare is building on sand, whereas a life devoted to the search for Truth is a foundation of rock upon which we may build the eternal temple of life. Lasting happiness and prosperity are found when we have a principle or cause to which we can devote ourselves. We are now finding less of self, we discover our completeness and the infinity of our being. Here also we discover the reason for our existence.

God evolved the world and all that is therein. What we behold through sense is not that world, but the false and finite concept of the world of God's creating. Rising in consciousness, we begin to perceive the spiritual universe and something of its purpose.

He who has found his inner self realizes that he is one with all men, animals, and things. He knows now that what affects one touches all. The universality of this truth is found in all scripture, as you will note in these examples:

Let one conquer the mean man by a gift. Charity is rich in returns; charity is the greatest wealth, for though it scatters, it brings no repentance.
HINDU SCRIPTURE

Their was the fullness of heaven and earth; the more that they gave to others, the more they had.
CHINESE SCRIPTURE

And give unto him is of kin to you, his due, and also unto the poor, and the traveler. And what good ye have sent before your souls, ye shall find it with God.
TURKISH SCRIPTURE

It is more blessed to give than to receive. …Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
THE BIBLE

As we realise our unity, or oneness, with all creation, we become more loving, gentle, patient, and understanding. Then only are we fulfilling the great teaching, 'Love thy neighbour as thyself', and then only are we glimpsing the kingdom of God, the temple not made with hands' - the man and universe of God's creating. It is this spiritual man, the man of God's creating, who has been given domination over all the earth.

There is no mystery about the inner life expect the mystery of godliness. Every thinker is concerned for his welfare, for the welfare of his family and community, for his country or even for the world. Experience soon convinces him that there is no hope for mankind in the people or the powers of this world. Men are too selfish. On the whole, they are too occupied and concerned with their own interests to be wholly unselfish in their attitude toward the world.

The more ambitious are often endowed with greater physical or mental attainments and soon sit in the seats of the mighty, and the world is led by those lacking integrity and love. Politicians rarely rise any higher than self-seeking, and the occasional statesman is lost in the picture.

Here and there in the world there are those inspired men and women who long for the dawn of the day of the brotherhood of man. Their hearts ache at the constant ridicule of men of good will and at the ever-recurring success of the power-drunk or money-mad in each succeeding generation. These noble people of vision are buffeted between their hope for the progress of mankind and the realisation of the futility of overcoming the forces of evil operating in human thought. Eventually the same question comes to each one: Is there no power to stop this reign of evil, to halt wars, to prevent famine and pestilence? Is man helpless before the Four Horsemen?

The search for freedom from the trials and tribulations of human experience has begun. It is really a search for God and it begins at whatever place in consciousness the individual may find himself. If he has a deep religious sense with a church background, he may seek the Power in religious worship, in some creed or dogma or some particular from of worship. The intellectual will undoubtedly seek the Power in the realm of philosophy or one or another of the philosophical religious teachings. In more recent times, the search may turn to the metaphysical church teachings or oriental yoga practices. Without doubt, many go from one to another of these steps still seeking God, or the Power, which may eventually halt the reign of mortality.

One day something happens within. Consciousness expands and sees that which before was invisible. One feels a flow of warmth; a Presence never before known becomes tangible, very real. This often is a fleeting experience. One may not even be certain that it occurred. It lingers in memory, but more as a dream than an actuality, until it happens again, and this time more clearly, more definite, and perhaps lasting longer. Gradually there dawns in consciousness the realisation of a Presence always present. This Presence may be felt as if lurking in the background of one's consciousness. At times it becomes a very commanding Presence dominating the scene or experience of the moment.

Now, however, evil is becoming less real; sickness is not so acute; financial stress or even lack gradually gives way to sufficiency; concern for one's self disappears as every need is met without taking thought or planning or worry or fear. The people or powers which heretofore have been feared now fade from view and their powerlessness. Desires become less acute. Fears evaporate. Assurance, confidence, alertness, keenness - these become evident not only to one's self but to those who are met and dealt with in everyday life.

The inner Presence has likewise become an inner Power. Form an occasional experience it has become the constant awareness. Forces of pain and pleasure in the outer experience diminish, whereas one becomes conscious of inner powers which are real and which produce and govern the outer life harmoniously and fruitfully. There is no longer fear of the evils of the outer world, nor is there the intense pleasure in the happier things of the outer world. It is possible to have the pleasures of the world and enjoy them, or not to have them and not miss them. There is a constant joy within that needs no outside stimulus.

In this consciousness, God is found to be the inner light or at least this light is felt as an emanation of God. God is felt as a divine Presence or Influence within. It is felt by those who come in contact with the man who has found his inner Self. It is reflected in his health and success. It radiates from him as sunbeams radiate from the sun.

In finding his inner life, this man has found peace, joy, harmony, security. Even in the midst of a failing world, he stands unmoved, untouched - the very presence of immortal Being.

When we are no longer limited by the five physical senses and have attained even a measure of spiritual sense, or Christ-consciousness, we find ourselves unlimited in terms of 'here' or 'there', 'now' or hereafter'. There is a going in and a coming out without any sense of time or space, an unfolding without degree, a realisation without an object.

In this consciousness, finite sense disappears and the vision is without boundaries. Life is seen and understood as unfettered from and limitless beauty. Even the wisdom of the ages is encompassed in a moment. Death disappears, and once more we see those previously separated from us by this so-called impassable barrier. This communion is not the communication as understood in the teaching of spiritualism, but an awareness of eternal life untouched by death. It is the reality of immortality seen and understood. It is vision of life without beginning and with no ending. It is reality brought to light. In this consciousness, there are no physical barriers of time and space. The vision encompasses the universe. It bridges time and eternity. It includes all being.

In this light, we see without the eye; we hear without the ear; we understood things not known before. Where we are, God is, because there is no longer separation or division. Here there are no rewards and no punishments. Harmony is. Life is not dependent on processes; we do not live by bread alone. We have the sense of 'peeking' into heaven and seeing what mortal eyes were not meant to see.

Colour Healing

Knowledge of the various colours, and their use in healing, for those who are ill, both in mind and body. It covers every aspect of the emotional self, giving guidance as to its control, and how to put into practice the wise teaching from Spirit for healthy, happy and harmonious living in our daily lives.

It is hoped that through the publication of this little book, the teaching of Ramadahn, through his medium Ursula Roberts, will reach an ever widening circle of followers, and permeate them with his love of humanity and desire to bring Peace and Harmony to all souls.

May his blessing of Peace, Light and Love, be with you all.

BLUE
Beloved brothers and sisters, I come and bring to you (as best I may) some touch of the spirit, a blessing that you may absorb in purity and peace. For truly do I say to you that all the work we undertake in our ministry from spirit unto earth is done through colour radiations which, as they touch the aura of earth's children, bring forth from within the inner soul of the individual a response unto the colour vibrations which we use.

BLUE is one of the colours of love; it is the colour of love which is peaceful, the colour which is healing; and it is the colour of love which is most tender and most gentle in its action. And so it is that here in the first plane of spirit existence, where we create our hospitals and our homes of healing, we bring the blueness of rays for the healing of many of earth's souls who have passed through the experience of death, into the re-birth of the spirit life. We have little rooms in which are to be seen couches. Upon which are laid the spirits of those newly separated from the earthly body (you will say "dead" but we will say "very much alive") and needing the healing and the peace of love, here in the spirit existence.

Is it not true that in your earthly world-when you are expecting the birth of a child-you lovingly prepare a sleeping place, lovingly prepare a little room and decorate it with the colour which you feel will be most good, most healing, most cheerful for the soul who is coming into your care? Even so it is in the spirit existence, where we prepare resting rooms and places of peace, into which earth's sufferers may be brought to be healed and restored and fitted for the continuance of their life in the many places of spirit experience. We fill the rooms with blue, with a gentle shade of healing blue, for those have left earth's experience feeling shocked and harmed by the lack of love, which so many in the earthly life extend towards their brothers and their sisters. Little children who are suddenly released from the body through accidents and through the violent actions of men and women; these feel that they have been unloved and so we bring them into the love colour, which is blue. Men and women who have been taken as criminals and sentenced to death and suddenly shaken from their body through earthly execution; these men and women (as they die) feel that they have been misjudged and unloved; and when we come, we take them into the place of healing in which they may be bathed in the healing love rays which are of a tender and beautiful blue. Even so is our ministry unto you who are in the earthy body. Many of you develop sicknesses of the soul, and sicknesses of the body. Weariness, illness, infections, which you say are a judgment upon yourself, but we say, often and often these arise because of a lack of lovingness in your life, or a lack of lovingness amongst the peoples who are surrounding you; and so, when you come to us seeking for healing, when you join yourself unto spirit circles asking for help, we bring to you the blue rays-either directly through our own hands, or else we direct them towards you through the hands, the thoughts or the auras of the healing mediums who are upon the earth.

Even as I speak to you so, beloved ones, and even as I bring your minds to dwell upon this thought, does not there also come unto you the recollection that Mary, the woman who stands before all your English world as the symbol of tenderness and love, the one who is known to you as the Holy Mother, is the not symbolized as clothed in blue? Her blue cloak! Even as long, long ago, the Mother in Egypt (Isis) was symbolised as arrayed in blue, blue robes which were the symbol of the great flowing water of the river Nile.

Therefore, it would be good if you, each one, in your desire to heal each other and in your endeavour to heal yourselves, would think upon this deep colour and would consider the fashion in which the great Giver of All Good has placed within your earthly world the reflection of the blue of spirit, in that He has balanced the world of nature with the blue of healing which man needs. Is it not true the sky itself is charged with the blueness of healing, and that the little flower (gentian) whose healing power is mostly attune unto the healing of the heart, throat and lungs, carries within itself the blueness of healing? For it is that the man, climbing upon the mountain heights-whose physical body has been strained through wrong emotion-may find that his lungs cannot easily sustain the pure air of those heights, and the little blue gentian blossom will bring to him a healing for that weakness of the body and the soul.

Too often in your mortal realm you refer to the action of the mind upon the body. I would say it would be better if you would refer more often to the actions of the emotions upon the physical body, and the parts governed by the action of the heart. For it is true to say that most diseases which afflict your brothers and sisters in the mortal realm are conveyed through the blood stream, and the blood stream is most directly affected through the circulatory pump of the heart, and the heart s most directly affected by the emotions. Things which you feel and the things which you try not to feel-through angers and through irritations that you try to control, not through love, but by the iron action of the will, by the self-control of the spirit.

In your pleasant English land, wherein so much of the distress of the soul comes through the structure of the human life, wherein personality strives against personality, and where upon your small island so many people are placed in such close proximity one to the other, there comes into being the stress of the emotional body, bringing about a disease of heart, lungs, throat and blood stream. Is it not also true that the Master Creator brings into your English land a profusion of the beautiful blue blossoms which can bring peace and which do bring healing?

Why, oh beloved ones, do you not make more use of the healing blossoms of the earth? The hyacinth clothes your earth in a beautiful blue, in the seasons of the spring, and as the seasons of the year pass, may other blue blossoms come to their fruition and pass into the earth once more. Yet does man gather the blueness of the blossoms and gaze upon them, or wear them himself, or breathe the perfume of these flowers - that the vibrations of the blossoms may be imparted into the etheric body? No. He fills the body with the diseased substances of harsh medicine and forgets that he is a spirit - spiritual, and that he may heal himself and his brothers and sisters, by studying the great healing laws which the Master Giver of All has created.

If you would but learn to breathe fully and deeply you would release yourselves from the effects of your turbulent angers and of the restricted irritations which react upon the inward body. If you would gaze upon the radiant blue colours of nature, so often would you be brought back again to tranquility; and as you grow in spiritual knowledge, in spiritual power, if you would but come with us into the deep blue pools of healing, situated within the spirit hills, then indeed could you return unto your bodies strengthened and healed and renewed.

Should it be, oh beloved ones, that the sickness of the body is so deep and the disharmony of the emotional self so strong that by breathing you cannot overcome it, then in spirit and in thought come with us to the high realms of spirit, and sit for a while beside the great world of light. Its source lies far into the far mountains, nearer to the Light of God, and let your eyes follow the rising of the water upward unto the clearness of the air, and behold the deep rich azure, kissed by gold, as its falls in a gentleness of music into the basin, there overflowing in streams of healing, which those whose task it is to bring healing unto those who are sick, can use, can draw and can direct unto those who need it. Therefore to you are desirous of bringing forth healing unto the sick and also unto your own inward selves, we would say unto you: in spirit and in thought, come unto the Fountains of healings, gaze upon the beauty of the blue, feel the touch of the gold, and the calmness and peace streaming through every part and particle of the etheric self, through mind and body, cleansing, harmonizing, and renewing, and washing away from you all discord, all memory of fear, every thought of sorrow, all touch of strife. For where there is the trueness of the blue of the spirit, there is calmness, peace, and there is infinite healing.

May the peace and the healing of the ever-springing fountains bring blessing unto you and those who are known unto you.

GREEN
Beloved brothers and sisters, I would endeavour to invoke for you the great power of peace which comes, when you at last come into a sense of unity, into the realisation that if there is to be harmony, so there must be unity between yourselves and the Great Spirit of which you are a part; for this continual search for peace is interwoven with this search for harmony, and harmony is dependent upon your attainment of unity. So do we pray for you each one, unity and peace. Also, this unity of which we speak is symbolised in all the world in which you live, as the great glowing green garment which encircles the whole world, as it were, in a mantle of peace and a unity.

You say unto me: "Speak, concerning the importance of this green. What place does it hold in the world of nature? What influence has it upon the being of man?" I would say to you, it has indeed, the influence of unifying all discordant and separated parts, and bringing them into harmony and into unity. Is it not that in the harmonious places of the natural world the garment of green is to be seen, either in the tenderness of the grass which lies like a mantle upon the body of the earth. Is not this greenness the symbol of the unifying of the separate part which manifest themselves within the natural world? The moisture of the air is wedded unto the texture of the soil, and the moist texture of the soil is wedded unto the golden radiance of the sun, and from the wedding of these parts, there comes forth a symbol of the unified whole in the form of the greenness of the foliage and the grass.

So it is also, in the being of man and woman. There is within the spiritual being the flowing redness of the vital force which surges through the person, and gives to them the fiery warming magnetic force of the earth. There is, also, in the person the pure gold of the spirit and the blueness of the emotions and of the feelings. Thus it is, if there is a unity and harmony in the being of this man or this woman, then is the gold blended with the blue, and there is to be seen in the spiritual aura the tenderness of green, or else there is the blending of the red with the gold and with the blue. And from that intermingling, too there blossoms forth a shade of green within the spiritual aura. When there is disruption and disharmony within the being of the one whom we love, when the tempers and the fevers of the earth have been too much, then we try to bring into that one, the cooling, soothing greenness and the rays of spirit when harmony may be restored, and coolness and peace may be attained, and the beloved one may be brought again into harmony and joy. It is not by chance that the Master Creator has blended these radiant colours in the earthly realms in such richness that man may behold the colours in the earthly realms in such richness that man may behold the colours which he mostly needs. It is not by chance that the most predominant garment of the earth is green. It is true that as man gazes upon it and partakes of the texture of it in food, so does it permeate the being with healing and with peace. Therefore take unto yourselves as you grow in spiritual knowledge and in spiritual power, take unto yourselves the healings greenness of the earth; gaze upon it with the vision of the eye, imbibe it into the living cells of the body by the eating the things which are green and kissed by the gold sunlight. Think upon this, that it may become part of the living aura, and then, as the green unfolds within you, you shall find yourselves able to open to the light, and you shall receive the light without confusion. You shall receive the light in harmony and in beauty.

It is not that in your earthly world too great a degree of light blights the being of the earth? Even so is the being of man. He searches for light and he desires it, yet he must be prepared, he must be charged, with the correctness of the force, if he is to receive the light in the being, and in the perfection of its beauty. And so it is that man stands - his feet upon the earth and his hands upraised unto the Being of The Light Divine, and he says unto The Master Creator "May Thy Light shine upon me, and shine within me and become part of me". And yet, even as the light is received so it is transmuted into the green rays of sympathy, so does it stream from him in the beauty of service and light. Think, oh beloved ones, there are those who within your earthly world lift up their minds unto their brothers and their sisters, and yet that teaching is cold and it is incomprehensible unto the being of those who see not the light in the same way. But let the light be revealed through the being of one whose heart is alive with sympathy and understanding, then does the teaching become clear and comprehensible unto others, for it is filtered by the green of sympathy ; and the light as it is revealed to man is stabilising shade which each one needs, and which is the colour of loving sympathy and loving healing.

What is the colour of peace?", you will say unto me. "Has peacefulness indeed a colour radiation?" Sometimes it is that peace is blue, but the blueness is the blueness of love, expressed as peacefulness. But the peace which comes from a perfect balancing of many parts of a being, this peace and the harmony comes to be shown forth as a degree of green. Not the deep emerald green of the grass, but a green which is so faint and tender that sometimes the finite eye may be able to distinguish its shade and may say that it is blue, or that it is a golden blue, but we call it the greenness of peace. There is a realm, beloved ones, a place within the spirit planes of light and understanding wherein the predominating shade is this beautiful greenness of light. You who are upon the earth sometimes may say that there is a greenness in the caverns which are beneath the waters, where the light is filtered through and shows in a greeny radiance. So do we say to you, in this realm of the spirit life to which some come for specialised training and understanding, therein is to be found the greenness of the rays of peace, and those who come into such a realm, come to learn to harmonise differing elements. To learn to absorb into themselves this tender greenness, that they may carry it forth unto the mediums and the healers of the earthly realm, and transmit it through them in a greenness of healing which will help to restore the sickened bodies and the disharmonised minds and the discordant conditions which man allows to rise, in his ignorance, as he takes his way through the many schools of experience.

We have been asked: "What effect do the colours worn by earth's children have upon them?" The colours you wear have some effect, but not quite so strong an effect as the radiation of a room in which you live or work for any length of time, for the clothing vibration is close to the body, but the colour radiation of the room is vibration upon the air, upon the skin and upon the consciousness as well as upon the vision, whereas the clothing is partly invisible to you. We have been asked too, by earth's children, if the darker shades of green, such as emerald, bring the peaceful ray unto them. I would say that in the spirit world we do not find the darker shades of green. These are more concerned with the purely material or worldly realm in which you yourselves are taking incarnation.

We have a very beautiful and clear shade which you call a translucent emerald green, but we have not a coarser green than that. In our particular use, the translucent emerald green will impart to the aura of those whom we are trying to help, a progression of thought, a stimulation of harmony within the mental self. It will help to stimulate knowledge and cause within the person a desire for the acquisition of spiritual knowledge. It is especially used when we are wishful that a medium should acquire knowledge so that we may use the mind of that medium, either in trance or in inspiration, for in some cases we desire to use the knowledge which they themselves have absorbed. We have in the spirit realms a Temple of Jade Green, into which many of the training healers enter, that they may absorb this very gentle, quietening healing vibration, to bring it through into the earth to harmonise, to quieten, and to cool persons who are fevered or in states of high fevered sickness. Some of earth's children speak to us of an antagonism through superstition to the colour green. We would say this antagonism arises through ignorance, for it is simply that you have not yet learned the wisdom of the spirit, which means all things are good when they are understood, and when they are held in their rightful place. Your antagonism does not prevent the green vibrations from impinging upon you in healing and in peace, and I would say to you further that the basis of the superstition of which you speak lies not in the beautiful greens which surround your English landscape, but is rather rooted in the superstition that the dark green of the olive tree is unlucky to man, because it was the colour of the trees amongst which the Master Jesus was to be found at the time of the tragic events of His life, and because man has always endeavoured to think that there is an evil force in nature which is concerned with tragedy and suffering, so man has built this idea that the dark green of the olive is an unlucky colour. This idea has been passed from mind to mind, and from mouth to mouth until all shades of green are considered to be unlucky also.

RED
Beloved ones, this matter of the colour which you register upon your earthly world as the shade of red, is the colour which we call in our work the stimulating and the life-giving ray of power.

We have been asked to say what effect this colour has upon the being of the individual. We would say that if it were not for this manifestation of colour-which is part of the whole radiance of light-you would not yourselves exist in the physical body as you are all able to do at this time. For upon the action of this red ray, which is largely emanated from the forces of the earth, there depends the harmony and the health of your physical bodies.

The rays of light as they penetrate the ethers which surround your earth, eventually penetrate the substance of the earth itself, and become stored or become imparted unto the grass, and regulate the living substance of earth, and from this ray is emanated forth in a life-giving force a stream of magnetism-which man and woman and living creature absorb day by day as their feet walk upon the earth, and as their body is bathed within this stimulating and life-giving magnetism. But when it is, as sometimes does occur, that man lives within his mighty cities and creates upon the living body of the earth streets, stratas of substances which do not always allow this magnetic force to flow in the fullness of its powers, then are the dwellers within the city depleted of some of the magnetic force which should be imparted to the body, and bring about this stimulating power upon the living cells. Therefore you will discover that many of those who sojourn within your mighty cities grow pale in the colour of the skin, and grow weak in the muscular atmosphere of the body, and become subject unto varying forms of disease which do not affect man, who lives in a more natural and congenial environment.

This disease force becomes active in man, because the life-giving magnetic red force is absorbed through the soles of the feet, and as it pours power throughout the whole living structure of the body, it is, as it were, an expanding and a life-giving force which has its effect within the cells of the blood stream and of the body. If it is that this stimulating force is absent, then the cells which should be expanding and living become weakened and depleted, and even will die, and then you will say that the tissue of the body has become diseased. It would well if each one who dwells within the city place would take time to place their feet upon the living substance of the earth, and to stand with the realisation that by thought they may absorb through the soles of the feet, the full power which is there.

It is to our knowledge, too, that those who have become sick and unable to walk or to move-lying for a length of time upon their couch of sickness and thus losing strength-when their feet are once more placed upon the earth, will find that the red magnetic force, as it rushes through the depleted structure, will bring about a state of unsteadiness, and they will say that they cannot stand, that the head is dizzy, because they are unable to adjust themselves fully unto the magnetic red life force which rushes through the body.

It is well for you to think upon these things, beloved ones, and it is well for those of you who dwell within the city places to realise the importance which this colour red plays in your life. For often it is, that when a weakness of the life force is beginning to occur, it would be possible for you to make an adjustment, when in the weariness of your body you feel that you are unwell, for you could take the bright red flowers which have their roots in the earth and gaze upon them, or you could create some substance which emanates the rays of this colour in sufficient degree of stimulating force, that they may stimulate the vision of the eye and give to the whole person an illusion of the stimulation of the red magnetic force.

We would think that it is for this reason, that man and woman will feel from time to time this sense that they must have brilliant colours near to their body and within their environment. It is good that should be used with understanding and that it should be used with care.

Those whose task it is to bring the healing unto those whose bodies and etheric bodies have become sick and depleted, will often use this colour with the understanding that by imparting it to the etheric body, they may bring about a stimulation of the blood circulation and a restoration of tissues which have become weakened. It is to our knowledge of this life force-have an abundance of this red magnetic ray within the aura; for each healer must in his own stead be a stimulator, as well as one who can impart rays of soothing and rays of renewing life.

Do not say unto each other that this is an evil colour. It is true that it is the colour of strength, and it is true that it is the colour of the war-like temperament-and it is true that it is the strong magnetic ray which may inflame the passions of men, but those of you who are growing in wisdom-those of you who are searching for the understanding of truth, you will realise the importance of this colour in your life.

For of what avail shall it be to you that you possess much knowledge and much wisdom, if you do not have the urge to share your wisdom or in some way to develop a strong and militant spirit which will cause you to impart your wisdom unto others. It is the red stimulating magnetic ray which causes the prophet to set forth upon his pathway and share his knowledge with others, and fight for that which he believes to be true.

And of what use shall the healer's force be unto him, unless he feels the stimulating urging power to go forth and to share his healing force with those who are weaker and more sick than himself? It is the red force emanating and surging through his being, which gives unto him the urge and the desire to go forth and to heal those who are sick.

Even as you send forth your rays in thought, interblending your auras one with another, a sharing of the magnetic force which you each one posses takes place. It is something which it is good for you to remember, for the healer is the healer who not only heals by the laying on of the hands, but who heals with the whole personality of his being, and the true healer is emanating a magnetic stimulating love force through every cell of the physical body, and through every part of the spiritual personality, too.

Deep within the basis of man's nature lies this strengthening power; deep within the aura of man lies the coil of red-for it is the very substance of the life of man himself.

It is only when passion is not reined by wisdom-it is only when the red force is rampant within you-that it becomes an evil power. It is only when men and women are filled with vitality that they receive undue stimulation from the use of this red colour in their homes and in their surroundings.

We would say unto you, take it, blend it with other colours; use it with wisdom, and it will bring much good unto you. When it is blended with the gold of aspiration, then indeed does it bring forth much good, but we would say to you, too, that you could never escape from the power of this magnetic red ray, because it is the ray of the very essence of the life force which affects the physical body as you are active in this your world to-day.

There are other rays which affect the etheric body, and there are other colours which affect the spiritual body, but the red magnetic force is the one which affects the physical body itself, and whilst you are incarnate within the physical body then you are dependent upon the red force which governs the activity of your physical body.

Remember always that there is round yourself the great fan of palpitant colour-this radiating light which is streaming forth from the centre of your being. Do not close it unto yourself with fear, do not shut upon it through despondency; do not hold it to yourself by a desire to use it in selfish endeavour, but rather remember that you are a centre, and from that centre, power must for ever stream forth. Truly the one who learns to lie in the knowledge that he or she is a centre of power, brings great blessing and great peace unto all who are within the normal surroundings.

We who commune with you and speak with you from time to time, we would that the whole of the earth might become clothed with the beauty of such personalities, so that the life-giving force may stream through the ethers from the awakened hearts of those who know themselves to be mediums; that the healing quickening force may stream from their feet unto the earth, may stream from their hands to stimulate the animal creation to a greater unity; and greater power shall stream forth from their thoughts in wisdom and in peace, and shall indeed become a radiant nimbus of light which is illuminating all the world around.

Set before yourselves, oh beloved ones, the desire to become lights unto the world; desire to become centres power and healers of the loved ones, and thus shall you indeed fulfil your spiritual destiny, not in the sense that you are seeking to understand whether you are the children of the Most High, but in the sense that you are living in the realisation that you are indeed centres of power-centres of light-living souls which are part of the Great Master Creator whose power is sent forth through you.

And so unto the Master Creator of All-unto the Lord of Light we would lift you, that for a while the radiant centre may become opened-the light may stream forth-and the Glory of the Lord of Light may become manifest upon the earth itself. May there be light every opened heart-may there be radiance from every opened mind-may there be life force from every living spirit, and may each one serve in their own place.

ROSE-PINK AND ROSE-RED
My beloved brothers and sisters, I come to release into the atmosphere of the earth, the rose red rays of heavenly love and the energising rays which are created and released in spirit. For most surely this is what you need each every one as you take your way through the many, many difficulties of your mortal existence. For is it not that often you feel within your heart clod and alone? Is it not also that you feel the chill of your wintry winds and you feel that the chill of the winter time enters not only into your body, but also into your inward soul and into the very secret places of your heart? I would say that this feeling of chill and of cold is not only of the temperature of this your English land: it is also because you are feeling the lack of the rose pink rays of loving affection which, when they are present, will make it possible for you to endure the chill of the winter without dismay and often without harm.

Is it not true that often and often again, those who are lovers will walk together in the chill of the wintry winds, and will sit together in places which are cold and icy, and yet the cold of the winter does not appear to affect the bodies, because they are warmed spiritually by the interplay of rose red colour which streams out from the heart and from the aura, and warms them from the spirit unto the body itself. For most surely I would say to you, the rose red rays are the rays of warming love and of kindly affection and of gentle friendliness. They are the rays which stimulate the heart and the soul and the very being of human and of animal kind, unto health and unto warmth and unto joy.

It would seem to me that many of you are chilled within the heart and chilled within your inward being because your lives are devoid of the warmth of affection. Some of you have separated from those you love (or the ones who should be nearest to you are absent) and you have not yet learned the inwardness of the truth, that love may stream out from your heart in warmth and in joy, whether the beloved be with you or whether the beloved be absent. The true understanding of the necessity of the rose red rays of love is simply that you love, and you continue to love, and you radiate, and you continue to radiate, the warmth of your affection unto all persons and unto all things giving them what you may not give unto the beloved of your heart.

I would say to you, in these years of earthly experience, there is a great and very difficult lesson being learned by all those who are taking life's earthly incarnation. That is that each one of you has to learn to love in certain degree of isolation and yet, in that isolation, to give forth lovingness. In the previous times of earth's history, life was composed of the group-the family group; sisters and brothers living in proximity one unto the other; husbands and wives remaining within or near to the circle of their family; parents remaining within the circle of the love of their children, and this created the group love. There was an interchange of the rose red force of love from grandparents unto grandchildren, and from these children unto others who belonged to their family groups; and so-in the times of the past-the rose red rays flowed from heart unto heart naturally, in the family groups, as they lived out their lives.

Here, as you are coming through into this great new age of experience, a different pattern shows itself in all the communities of your earthly life and especially in your earthly cities; a pattern of life which means that the family unit becomes separated and people (instead of remaining in proximity one with the other) are slowly drifting into isolation. Husbands are leaving their wives, children are leaving their parents and old people are left to live out their lives in isolation. Many of you show forth this pattern within yourselves of this isolation, in that you live alone, or in that you are separated from your family groups and you forget-in this semi-state of isolation, and in the quietness of your aloneness-you forget that you need the rose red rays of love and of friendliness, and without them you faint and you fail, and you become alone and grey.

It is because you need the rose pink rays that, out of your aloneness and isolation, you develop the inward subtleties of disease and of illness which quietly begin to afflict your minds and your bodies. When you come into groups and when you enter into the friendship of your varying spirit circles, you are aware of warmth and you become conscious of healing. You are restored-because we interblend with your aura and we interblend into your groups the stimulating rose pink rays, that your heart may begin to glow more with lovingly warmth, and health and harmony may be restored in your inward being.

I would say to you, beloved ones, you need wisdom and you need understanding as you learn to live your ways in the mortal life. You need the peace found in isolation, but you need also the warmth of friendliness and the interchange of the warm colour rays which are to be found when you are with people who love you. They may argue with you, disagree with you and make life difficult for you; nevertheless you need the rose pink rays which are emitted from their aura in the warmth of love and in the kindliness of friendship. And so I would say to those who are seeking to learn the lessons of healing: to you who wish to give forth and heal the sicknesses of the world and the sickness of your brothers and your sisters: remember that your healing is not only to be found in the overcoming of pain and of disease, but it can be in the simple fundamental healing which takes place in the restoration through kindly friendliness and in the gentleness of loving concern one for the other. So I would say, do not be so sparing in your kindliness. Give of yourselves more generously, and be a little more generous unto those who are lonely, unto the ones who are alone, unto the aged, unto the difficult, because these are the ones who need your healing in the rose pink rays of loving kindness and gentleness of concern. Each of you as you wish to heal, those of you who are seeking to serve Spirit, you should be able to lay in thankfulness before your Master Creator, day by day, the pearls of your unobserved kindliness, the pearls created by service, the pearls created by the warmth of your quiet healing and your gentle love. It is out of such pearls that the great rosaries of your prayer will be created, the rosaries which are like great strings of glowing beads that stretch from yourselves unto the high places of the spirit and bind you into a shining bondage with those high spirits who desire to impart unto you the fullness of their power and the beauty of their inspiration.

The way from the lesser self unto the higher self is not built out of the praise of men. It is not created out of the little writings in newspapers. It is not created out of the adulation and the praise of those who have seen what you do. The way out of the lesser self into the greater self is created in secrecy, in silence and step by step, by your own secret and lovingly service unto the unlovable, unto the lonely, unto the sick, who often may not even thank you because they are unaware of what they have been given. So I would say, give. Give of the warmth of your love in the secrecy of your prayer. Give of the warmth of your thoughts as you take way day by day. Break out of the encirclement of self-pity which binds you all round as in a cold shell, in which you are devoid of the rose pink warmth of flowing love. Break out of your garments of self pity and become like the blossoms of your earth, which break out of the encircling bud and show forth the radiant beauty of their petals in an unfoldment of colour and of joyfulness. For most surely I would say as you learn to do so, then indeed you show forth the beauty of the spirit. You restore the divine circulation within your spiritual being by means of which the circulation may be restored within the mortal and physical being. For there is a beautiful and inward subtle relationship between the circulation of the force in the spiritual body and the circulation of the force in the mortal body itself. Those whose hearts outflow in love and compassion do not develop the closed-in diseases of the circulation: but those whose hearts have been wounded by sorrow and who close I their heart through self-pity, these interfere with the divine circulation of love in the spiritual being, and through this they interfere with the circulation of the mortal and the physical body itself. Because this is true and because we would lay upon you our garment of rose red love, so often and often again, we bring you the rose pink rays to warm the heart, and the rose pink thoughts of affection. When the warmth of the heart grows cold in earth's children, and you come to the life of the spirit, we take you into the gardens of healing in which the roses bloom in perpetual beauty; and those who have loved to tend the blossoms of the earth and whose joy was in the gardens, these guard the gardens of the spirit and bring together the roses of the spirit, that in these beautiful gardens, filled with the rose pink blossoms of healing, those who are lonely, those who are cold, coming to the spirit life may rest awhile and wall amongst the roses, and, resting there, may inbreathe the perfume and absorb the radiance of the colour, until their spirit being glows and shines in the warming rays, and it may be said that healing has taken place even for these. So to you, too, I would say: For those whom you have not been able to love. Those whom you have forsaken in the earthly way, the aged ones from whom you have separated yourselves and whom you have allowed to die in loneliness in the time of their old age, cease to torment yourselves with the remembrance of what you did not do for them, but send unto them your pink thoughts, surround them with the beautiful roses created by your love, and so indeed shall you heal them and speed them upon their way with the love that you failed to give in the times of your earthly experience.

Encourage one the other. Do not cast each other down by your lack of lovingness, by your harshness of criticism. Be gentle one with the other. Give out the rose pink rays of your warmth and compassion and your lovingness. And thus shall you all most surely, most slowly and most beautifully emerge out of the limitations of the past, into the greatness of the future, wherein you may say, as you look back over the passage of time, as you look back on the expansion one of the other, you may say, "Indeed here is the work of the spirit! Here is the blossoming of the soul! Here is the showing forth of the rose pink rays of love and kindly endeavour which we have tried to exchange one between the other."

We would that we might look down upon you from the high planes of the spirit and that we might behold your earth, not clad in the greyness of despondency, but that we might behold it like a beautiful rose garden, since from every heart the rose pink rays are streaming out and each and every one of you show the rose and the gold of your spiritual endeavour in the inward place of the soul. How beautiful it would be! How beautiful t is when we see it see it so, much more beautiful to behold than people clad in their grey garments of self-pity and pressed all around and about by the greyness of their fears. Shine and glow and flame and be yourselves, beloved ones, in the warmth of the spirit and then indeed shall you go forth as the right royal children of the most high God, serving, healing and blessing wheresoever you may go.

From the gateway of the seventh sphere I looked forth and beheld the glory of the Spirit, the heart of Light, which I think is God. It is not possible to describe to you the radiance and the beauty of His Power, but if you can visualize within your mind some mighty lake of water, lying calm and translucent and unmoving and then, gleaming upon it the radiance of a sun which is not of a dazzling splendour, but soft, beautiful as moonlight and yet without the vagueness of moonlight; and within the heart of this great radiance, a centre which is like a glowing heart-rosy, gentle, palpitating and throbbing throughout the whole; then try to feel this enormous stillness-radiance palpitating with life and with love, flowing in you and through you and in all things-then, indeed, you might have some symbol, some vague understanding of that which we know as THE GLORY. So from Thee, oh THOU Great Master Creator, we would draw the rose pink rays of heavenly love to bless and to seal all earth's children into Thy Service, and unto Thy Lovingness, from this day unto all the days which are to be.

RUBY, MAUVE AND PURPLE
Beloved ones, there are many treasures which the human heart desires, as it takes its way through the mortal world.

"What then," you will say to us, "What then is the treasure of the soul which we should seek and which we should amass that it may abide in this world and in the life which continues beyond the mortal span? Is there such treasure?" We would say to you, beloved ones, the treasure which endureth forever is not the treasure of man's praise, nor yet of man's blame; it is not to be found in the wealth and possessions of the earth, but it is to be found in the jewels of the spirit-for the jewels of he spirit are the treasure of the spirit, and it is this treasure which does not fade, nor rust, nor die away, for it increases with the journey of the soul as it goes on into the world of light.

Wherein, then, lies the gaining of the treasure of the spirit? We would say to you that it comes to pass in this wise. There are those upon the earth who have for another soul the true, deep, yearning tenderness of love; and who with the tenderness of love find that they must, for the beloved one, sacrifice long hours of sleep, and sacrifice their hours of pleasure, and must even sacrifice sometimes the comfort of the body; for they who love much will sacrifice all that is dear to them for the one who is beloved.

Yet even in this sacrifice for love there is a pain, and there is often a bleeding of the heart-for the beloved one does not always appreciate the sacrifice, and does not always see the goodness that is there. Is not the lover spurned by the beloved? An does not the beloved often receive from the lover the deep wounds of misunderstanding and the little pin-pricks within the heart which are the words carelessly spoken and the thoughts which are wrongly directed?

The wounds of the heart are the wounds which are received lovingly and silently; the wounds of the heart only come when there is a great tenderness of love, and it is as if the heart itself bleeds for the one which it loves. And when there has been a sufficiency of loving, and when there has been a greatness of sacrifice, then it is within the spiritual body which is the counterpart of the physical body, that we see slowly coming into being that which we call the spiritual life blood of the heart, forming itself into the rubies of the spirit; forming itself into the treasures of the heart which are the glowing red jewels which abide forever-for these are the jewels of sacrifice.

This is treasure indeed, oh beloved ones.. Treasure which you shall proudly wear when you leave the physical body, and which is the symbol and the sign unto all who shall see you. This man, and this woman, has lovingly served and waited, and has lovingly sacrificed for love, so that the heart has bled, and the ruby jewel is the symbol and the sign of his love.

And as the journey continues into the world of light, what do we behold there? We behold that the ruby jewels are proudly worn, and around them often are woven the golden jewels which are the jewels of wisdom, and which enhance the ruby jewel of love. For those who labour much in the service of the beloved ones; those who sacrifice much for those who bring unto them sometimes only pain; do they not gain wisdom in their search? Do they not come unto a fuller understanding of the meaning of the soul as it progresses along the pathways of life? Do they not draw from the whole fabric of life itself the golden threads of hope and of wisdom, that they may weave around them the jewels of sacrifice and enhance them, that sacrifice and wisdom may be woven together? Beautiful are these jewels, and proud are those who wear them!

There are the treasures of wisdom to be seen in the mauve and purple jewels which the spirit attains as it searches for wisdom by desiring through the understanding of the mind, and through the development of the spirit, to understand the laws of the Master Creator.

When the years have passed away and the brain has grown weary in its search and much sacrifice has been made in the desire for the understanding of the Master Creator, then, indeed, the ruby jewel of love is formed, but it is a deeper hue, for it is the deep purple of the wisdom which is crystallized within the soul. How we rejoice, and how glad we become when we see the amethyst rays developing within the human aura, for these show the development of quiet wisdom, quiet understanding and the healing which accompanies it. The royal shades of deep purple, these, too, are the colours of strength and of power; the personality who has the gift of oratory, such a one has a purple ray within the aura; the one who is able to wield the scepter with justice, this one, too, carries the purple of power. The man and the woman who an hold responsibility for the work that they do amongst large numbers of people, these, too, develop the royal purple of power within the aura. But the purple must be balanced by gold, and it must be blended with rose, ere ever the soul may use the power with love and with wisdom.

Sometimes it seems to us that you understand but dimly the part we play when we companion you, day by day, in the midst of your multiple activities of the earth and in your endeavour and striving after healing and truth. It is that we come to you because within your spiritual aura we may behold the latent greens of a beautiful patience, or the latent purple of a beautiful power, or because we behold within your aura a radiant blue, which is still overlaid by the weaknesses and the materialistic life of the earth. Beholding it we will often say to you: "You have the capacity within yourself for service; you have within yourself the power of devotion."

It is because we see these lovely colours which betray the latent beauty which is to be developed; it is because of this that we come near you and companion you day by day. Thus it is that you will have those who come robed in delicate shades of mauve, that they may blend and stimulate their influence with the aura of those who as yet realise only a small degree of the high devotion of love and prayer, and whose devotion is often weakened and destroyed by doubts and fears.

But this spirit standing near will blend with your aura the gentle mauves and purples so that the colours of your own aura are strengthened and made secure; and when that work has been accomplished, then that spirit will pass silently on to serve and strengthen another.

Therefore we say unto you, beloved ones, as you live day by day, accept the experiences which come to you with a joyful thanksgiving, and if it is that your pathway is fraught with pain, if it is that your way becomes darkened with sorrow, or if it is that your way becomes enriched with a greatness of love-yet give unto the Master Creator a thanks for this experience, for always it is increasing the treasure of your soul.

Come not unto us with hands which are free of the treasures of the soul; come not unto us with a heart which has been emptied of love; come not, as some come, into the radiant light, empty and ashamed. Rather come unto us with the fullness of your experience, and with your jewels shining upon your robes as the symbol and the sign that you have gained a treasure which you may carry through, and through the worlds of light. A treasure which shall be yours unto all the times that shall be.

GOLD
Beloved ones, I would try to-day to extract from the pure and beautiful radiance of light, that golden ray which is so essential to your understanding, so necessary to your life whilst you are living in the mortal ways of the flesh and in all the ways of your daily experience. Truly do I say to you, beloved ones, the golden ray is the ray of wisdom; it is the light of joy; it is the power which stimulates spiritual growth and spiritual unfoldment. Where there is gold there is hope. Where there is gold there is laughter. Where there is gold, there indeed, is to be found happiness. Although all things of the earth may appear to be grey and dead, nevertheless, if the gold of the spirit is there then indeed hope, renewal and spiritual power will come into its manifestation. Because this is so, the Master Creator has set his signet in a golden sign upon most things which live in your earthly world.

Is it not true that as the natural things of the earth come into their blooming and their natural growth, they each one show upon themselves the golden mark of the creative power? The grass and the rush and the leaf and the twig at some time in their development show forth a touch of gold. The leaf in its unfoldment is green, but I would say to you if you look with the discerning eye and you search with the observing eye, you will discover that upon the leaf there is still hidden the secret touch of gold.

Within the blossoms (the beautiful healing flowers which grow upon your earth, the flowers whose scent can bring healing unto the inner soul and spirit of the individual) is carried somewhere a touch of gold, either within their hearts, or upon their petals, or in the encasement which keeps them in their beautiful shape and form, because within each living thing is the imprint of the creative power which in the kiss of light brings forth a hint of gold. All that is good, all that is healing, all that is created carries the sign of gold upon itself, while those things which belong to the destructive world, the things which may harm or kill or destroy, these are devoid of the golden radiance because they do not as yet carry upon themselves the golden recreative touch.

Should it therefore be strange that we bring unto you the golden radiance and golden ministry of the joy of spirit? All around and about you there move the spirits who bring unto you the golden thread of their ministering power; the golden thread of the joy which they interweave in and out of your aura so that you may be a little brighter and a little more hopeful, somewhat changed within yourselves. Most surely and most truly, we use gold from the spirit with knowledge, with power and with wisdom, much as it was used in the temples of olden times, when gold was woven into the ornamentation upon the walls and upon the ceilings, that the vibratory power of the golden metal might gleam and shine and reflect into the minds of the ordinary people coming to the temples for enlightenment and for joy. Even now, so do we from the sprit life use gold. So fear not, because you are the children of the Spirit, and you are growing more certainly into this knowledge that you are the children of your Heavenly Father. You are not alone as you walk upon the way, for as you turn your face towards Spirit, and try to open your mind to the influence of Spirit, then each and every one of you becomes encircled all around about by a golden protective power, a golden light, whereby you are each on known and recognised.

This is no mere symbol. It is a living thing which takes place within your soul, as you turn towards the light, as you lift up your mind unto spirit, as you try to evolve within yourself the knowledge of the eternal truths of life, so does there begin to grow and to glow within the inward spiritual aura a light which is the golden light of hope, the golden light of truth, the golden flame of your inwardness of prayer and dedication. From this golden radiation which you emit, we of the spirit are able to withdraw, as it were, a little radiant thread out and around you, so that each one becomes encircled by the golden ring of your own fire, the golden fire emitted from your heart, he golden sign which says unto every spirit, no matter wheresoever you may go: This one walks in the circle of protection, this one has been sealed into the service and the power of the Spirit, and as your power of knowledge is unfolding, so does there begin to gleam and shine within your aura a golden beauty.

Keep not this golden beauty unto yourselves; rather know that as spiritual beings living your lives upon the earthly world, you can send forth from your own mind golden threads of hopeful thought, golden thoughts of joy to lighten the ways of earth's sufferers, and to bring unto earth's lonely and hopeless ones a brightening of their condition, as they are touched by the golden radiance which you yourselves spread out and exude as golden drops of joy. Be not sparing in your giving, but be generous. You may possess nothing of the gold of the earth, but if you have the gold of the spirit within your heart and the gold of the spirit within your mind then indeed you are rich. beloved ones, because you are rich with the richness of the spirit and he who has the gold of joy, and he who has the gold of hope, and he who has the gold of knowledge can walk amid all the fears, all the changes, all the circumstances of the earth and yet can never be poor, for the gold of the spirit endures and endures and is replenished and is replaced from the infinite source of light and from the great Giver of all good gifts.

Now I would gather you up, each one, that you may take into your hands as a little leather pouch the essence of the thoughts which I have imparted to your minds. Take it unto yourself and gather into it something of the golden radiance of the spirit, and then fold around your pouch the little string of dedicated thought and your desire for good, that it may be taken into the hidden places of your heart, and secreted in the inner place of your mind, and it may become your treasure.

Oh Thou great giver of Light! Thou great Creator of Good! Your children hold before you their little purses! Fill them with your golden radiance: touch them with your golden beauty and, as they secrete within their inward minds the treasures of wisdom, may they each one learn to use it wisely and well, that as they go forth from this place unto all the outer ways of the earthly life, they may go as rich men and women, the rich merchants of your love, carrying forth the wealth of the spirit into all the ways wherein they may go.

SILVER
The silver thread of Holy Influence weaves and interweaves in the midst of all that has been created. In the great world of nature it is woven as the ever-running thread of light, which glimmers through leaves and touches the earth into life and new activity; it is shown as light and radiance which warms and quickens all things in the natural world. The silver thread of Divine Influence is to be found in all things that live, for is it not within the life of the fiercest animal shown forth as tenderness and devotion unto their own? Is it not to be found in all creatures which have the poor of affection, of a feeling within themselves? In them, indeed, is the silver thread of love, shown forth according to the nature of the creature. In man, too, the same silver thread of Holy Influence is to be discerned in that every man and every woman, however gross or however illuminated the life may be, still have a consciousness of good and an understanding of the upward growth of the soul; each one catches the silver thread and it is unto them a hope and an inspiration whereby they may climb for ever upwards, out of the deep valleys of self on to the high, beautiful peaks inspiration.

Is not the same silver thread of Divine Influence to be found in the spirit life, in that those who are freed from the body and dwelling within this land of radiant light, still these, too, hold fast unto this silver thread by which they are able to draw themselves upward to greater glory; upward towards greater light, because it is the silver thread of Divine Influence within the soul which is forever at work, and forever bringing out of all things, created beauty and order, light, and progression. So it is because of this silver thread Holy Influence and Love, that we of the spirit come close unto those of the earth who are trying to catch hold of the silver thread, as it is known most surely to those of the spirit life, that together they may rise to greater heights and may see, with an increased clarity of vision, that all things belongs unto the Master Creator of All.

So you come at last to see that there is no darkness so deep, but somewhere within it is to be found some thread of silver light, there is no state so gross but what there is the hope of transmutation because the silver thread of love is always to be found there, and through all the chaos and the great unrolling changes of the mortal world, there, too, is the silver thread of Divine Love and Beauty to be seen; slowly bringing all things into order; slowly regenerating chaos and bringing it into harmony. So, beloved ones, we would gather into one complete unity the silver threads of love and spiritual aspiration - as it is shown forth in the heart and the soul of each one, that the silver threads may become woven into one beautiful love cord, together with wholeness of unity and purpose, that through the mingled strands of this beautiful silver rope there flows unto all, light, healing, beauty and power.

Beloved ones, it is with joy we come to bring unto your realisation the wonder of this silver thread created by your God, your Heavenly Father. It is in the realisation of this wonderful influence in all things that we would say the greatest power of spirit revelation is blossoming in your world to-day. When the first plans and campaigns were made in the Centres of Light - that spirit should try to break through to earth and to bring a revelation through their mediums - the first thought and the first plan was to bring unto man a true understanding of his spiritual nature and through that understanding, a clearer relationship unto his God. The understanding now sought is not only that the spirit lives, but in what state it lives and of what nature is spirit itself. Therefore we would say to you, the fruits of the work and the fruits of the revelation which have been made over long years of patient devotion unto this task, are to be seen in the flowering of a new consciousness within the soul and the mind, the flowering of hope, the flowering of knowledge, the growing of understanding and the sense which each one is gaining, that they stand upon the pathway of experience and sow into the field of human life the seed of goodness; with the knowledge and joy, even if they see not the reaping of the sowing, within the time of earthly experience.

I would say to you, it is so true that from day to day, from week to week and from year to year, there is woven in and through your own life and the lives of those who are closely linked with you, a singing melody, which is like the weaving and the interweaving of simple notes, which woven together create melody and can be shown forth either as a discord or as a harmony. The singing melody is the daily life. Sometimes each of you in your thinking of the pattern of human life are aware of this, and yet is it not true that as you grow in knowledge, as your understanding deepens, you are each one inclined to overlook the truth that each one needs within the singing melody of the daily life, that perfect silver note which is sounding like a true and beautiful note, and which we call the echoing note of true worship. As you grow away from the set and orthodox ways of your old religion, you tend to feel that this worship is something which is not altogether necessary. In falling into this ever-changing pattern of your giving of service and of your receiving of service, you are inclined to overlook the fact that this note of worship sounds like a silver trumpet through all the symphony of life. You who are growing in wisdom and you who are unfolding the inwardness of knowledge should understand this, and rather than ceasing to worship, you should each one learn to strike the silver note within your own lives, with a regularity and with an understanding, realising that even as the child goes forward, through his reverence and adoration, so does the human soul go forward, step by step, rising ever slowly, ever more slowly, by setting for himself or herself a time for the contemplation of the things of the Spirit. A time in which adoration may be given unto the Great Master Creator and Maker of all good things.

When those of you who are able to come into this inward sense of praise and of worship are able to enter into the deep inward silence of meditation, then I would say to you, beloved ones, as you feel the peace and the holiness and the power flooding your soul with blessing, do not forget, do not cease to give thanks unto the Great Giver of all, and your praise and your worship for the goodness which has come unto you. For it is true that as you thank your God for the gift of healing, as you thank your God for the richness of friendship, and as you thank your Lord for the simple joys which bless your lives as with a silvery dew, so do you strike within your inward soul by this gesture of thankfulness that which resounds like a little silver note within the singing symphony of life, which, as it echoes and re-echoes within you and around you, creates sweetness and a harmony and a beauty that is good for us to see, as well as being something which may echo and sound throughout the spheres until it comes back again in beauty unto the Source from which all goodness flows.

Although I say unto that which you receive from on High, you must also return by praise, I would say that from on High, in silence and beauty, peace and love may flood your being in your time of prayer, and as you go forth into your outer life that which you have received is imparted in friendship and in beauty unto those whom you may meet from day to day. As they are enriched, and as they are uplifted, and as they are healed, then may it be from their souls there may sound the note of praise, and the wave of light may go back unto the Source, coming back unto you in renewal and in peace.

So, flowing, moving, vibrating and healing, perfect power comes unto earth, returns again unto Spirit, flows through the instruments, the earthly channels, comes back again in purity and in peace unto the Eternal Source, and then comes back to earth once more. This is the perfect circle, the circle in which the incarnate life is enclosed; it is the circle of eternity; it is the perfect circle of Divine creation. When man stands upright upon his feet, upright in his spiritual stature - with arms outstretched - he is the Cross within the centre of the ever-flowing Circle.

May the Cross shine and glow within the ever-flowing Circle of Eternal Life, Eternal Light, Eternal Love, Eternal ever-flowing creative Beauty. As the cross, which is man, shines there, so may it give forth through the hands - healing, and through the feet - healing, and through the eyes - healing, and benediction. For these who receive the silver blessing belong to Thee, oh Thou Great Giver of All, and unto them we bring the symbol of Peace, Perfect, Peace, here and now, to abide with them forever.

Reverse Speech The Voice of the Inner Self

Recorded songs and speech played backwards reveal intelligent words, phrases and messages of precision and design that can't be explained away by random generation.

A CURIOUS PHENOMENON DISCOVERED BY ACCIDENT
The whole thing really began as an accident. It was October 1983 and I was living in Los Angles at the time. It was a week before my 28th birthday and I was in the bathroom preparing to go out for the evening. I had a portable Walkman attached to my belt and I was listening to music at full volume. Suddenly I tripped and my Walkman fell straight into the toilet bowl. Somewhat upset, I retrieved my waterlogged Walkman and tried to repair it. However, my electronic skills were not as good as I thought and somehow I managed to wire up the unit so that it only played backwards. Attempts to return it to normal failed and I was left with somewhat useless portable tape player.

I returned to my home country of Australia a few weeks later after hitch-hiking through Europe for a short time. I had thrown away all my belongings in London to lighten my load, but for some strange reason I took my back wards-playing Walkman with me. (I also carried a sleeping bag, a thick brown sheepskin jacket and Ugh boots, which kept me warm as I slept in the snow.) After many adventures, the reversed Walkman ended up back in Australia in my junk drawer, gathering dust.

A few months later, in April 1984, I was the director of a halfway house for teenagers in Berri, a small South Australian country town. This town was the central hub of the Riverland, a major wine manufacturing region, and was totally surrounded by grape vines. The halfway house, "The Abode", was situated on the banks of a large river, the River Murray, that flowed through the centre of the town.

While running this halfway house I heard about rumours, perpetrated by American evangelists, that rock and roll was "the devil's music". It was said that if certain records were played backwards, subliminally suggestive and occult messages could be heard.

My mind immediately raced back to my teenage years and I remembered that some of the Beatles' records were supposed to contain backwards messages. These messages reportedly gave clues hinting that Paul McCartney had died. There seemed to be nothing too sinister in that; just a marketing exercise.

However, the evangelists' claims went further, stating that many of these backwards messages had not been placed on the record intentionally, but rather seemed to 'appear out of nowhere', mixed in the gibberish. Some of them even claimed that they had been placed on the record by the forces of Satan himself, with the sole intent of brainwashing the youth of the world.

Eventually I had on my hands several frightened teenagers who believed they had heard demons speaking to them backwards on rock-and-roll records. I was somewhat intrigued but more angry at this ridiculous rubbish scaring the teenagers in my charge. Then I remembered my broken Walkman that only played backwards and I decided to investigate these claims with the sole purpose of debunking them so I could down the teenagers.

So I retrieved my Walkman from the junk drawer and began my project by beginning to play tape recording of music backwards. I fully expected to hear nothing but meaningless sounds that had probably excited someone's overactive imagination. I was wrong.

As I played these tapes backwards I began to hear intelligent words and statements mixed in among the gibberish. My first thoughts were that they were merely random sounds or the product of my own overactive imagination. I checked my hearing by asking friends and associates to confirm my findings. Initially I would play them the tapes backwards and, without prompting, ask them what they heard. In nearly all situations people could hear something, if not close to the exact words that I was hearing.

Surprises with Backwards Phrases in Songs
As time went on, I conducted more controlled and elaborate tests. I prepared a standard tape that had 10 reversals dubbed onto it, isolated from the gibberish. Then I chose people at random and divided them into three separate groups. In Groups One I would ask them to tell me what they heard; in Group Two, I would ask them to hear something that wasn't there; and in Group Three, I would tell them what I thought was there. The results of these tests were encouraging.

In Group One, most people could hear a word or two, if not most of the phrase as I had documented it; in Group Two, people could not hear what I asked them to hear; and in Group Three, there was often an instant recognition of the 'backwards phase' as soon as they heard it. These results demonstrated to me that there was clearly something at play here other than imagination.

Random occurrence eventually seemed to be highly unlikely, as the backwards phrases I was finding were occurring with far too much precision and design for them to be dismissed so easily. I did find that a small number of sounds often reversed to say the same thing each time the words were spoken, and I eventually compiled a separate list of these sounds.

However, the vast majority of backwards phrases could not be explained away by random generation. They were often long and eloquent, sometimes with rich, poetic language and metaphor, consisting of several words that made complete grammatical sense. Additionally, their occurrence appeared to have intelligence and design. Sometimes I could find several backwards phrases in one song, each phrase relating to each other. Then there was the sheer volume of these phrases.

I was finding backwards phrases in approximately 50 per cent of all the songs I looked at. It seemed to me that the chances of these phrases occurring all by themselves were almost incalculable, similar to throwing letters of the alphabet randomly onto the floor and expecting the Lord's Prayer to appear magically.

For the most part, I discounted random chance along with imagination early in the research. This is not to deny the effect of these two factors, for when I eventually began to teach this process to others they became formidable enemies. Yet it was still obvious to me that something separate and distinct was occurring in addition to incidences of random chance and imagination. I was convinced that this separate phenomenon could be documented, proved and tracked. I became obsessed, and all other activities in my life rapidly faded into insignificance. I wanted to know what these backwards phrases were and how they were getting there.

Another explanation I pursued in the early days was that the musical tracks had been altered and some recording technician had cleverly placed these messages backwards into the sound-tracks. This explanation turned out to be true for a small percentage of songs. Using a recording technique known as "backward masking", it is possible to place backwards messages onto recording tracks. It is very easy to recognise when this has occurred: the superimposed track can be heard as gibberish if the tape is played forwards, and recognised as an intelligent statement when the tape is played backwards.

However, this explanation did not explain the vast majority of backwards phrases that I was finding. Most of them were obviously not occurring by technical tricks. There were no superimposed soundtracks and they simply appeared like beacons of light in the midst of a sea of gibberish. Their occurrence was determined solely by the unique way that the forwards-speech sounds were sung at the time of recording. In other words, the backwards phrases were a reversal of the phonetic sounds and structure of the forwards-speech sounds.

These sounds were being formed and delivered by the brain in such a way that they communicated two messages at once-one forwards and the other one backwards. This was certainly a curious phenomenon-two modes of speech occurring simultaneously, yet in the opposite direction to each other.

There is on other explanation for these backwards phrases that bears mention and that is Satanic manipulation. I must admit that in the first few weeks of research I did get eerie feelings walking into my house late, and my emotions did become somewhat edgy. But fortunately, all the 'dreams' faded in time and the phenomenon itself disproved this fundamentalist explanation.

For a start, not all the messages were occult in nature as had often been claimed. It depended on the song. If the song was about the occult, then the backwards message would also be about the occult. Love songs contained backwards messages about love, political songs contained backwards political messages, and so forth. Even Gospel songs had their own messages, and they were usually about God, but not always.

I found myself growing increasingly angry at the fundamentalist preachers as my research contained, for they had either misrepresented the phenomenon or jumped to hasty conclusions based upon only minimal findings. These were not backwards messages about anything! And the content of these messages seemed to be determined not by demons but by what was on the forwards soundtrack.

FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS COMPLEMENTARITY
We thus come to the first of many observations about this phenomenon that I noted in the first years of research. There were intricate relationship between the forwards and reversed phrases, as well as a definite structure and form to the reversed phrases. The most significant of these relationships was the fact that the forwards and reversed would usually relate to each other. The subject matter of the forwards would be the subject matter of the reversed phrase. I called this simple observation the Principle of Complementarity. It eventually grew to become the cornerstone of my theory's future development.

Most of 1984 and '85 I spent researching a wide cross-section of music ranging from classical to hard rock. I remember being amazed that the "Hallelujah" chorus from Handel's Messiah was almost exactly the same backwards at it was forwards. I began to keep an organized filing system of all my tapes and notes. I researched libraries and computer nets trying to find any information I could, for I was convinced that-with something as significant as this-there had to be some work or research being conducted somewhere else. But I searched almost in vain, finding only the odd book by religious fundamentalists and the early work of Californian researcher William H. Yarroll II.

From 1980 to 1983 Yarroll worked primarily in the area of rock music and its effects on the brain. It was his initial scientific research that unwittingly prompted much of the religious hysteria of the '80s. William Yarroll was also responsible for backwards messages being discussed in the Californian State Assembly and also in Arkansas. Both cases occurred in 1983 and the Arkansas case resulted in Governor Bill Clinton signing a bill requiring all rock-and-roll records suspected of containing backwards messages to be labeled as follows:

Warning: This record contains backward masking that makes a verbal statement which is audible when this record is played backwards and which may perceptible at subliminal level when this record is played forward.

The bill did not become law, but the questions persisted.

Other than the aforementioned cases, I could find no other work on the subject. This seemed to be a new area of research and I felt a renewed sense of excitement. I was like a pioneer exploring a new frontier.

NEW DIMENSIONS WITH THE SPOKEN WORD
Then, in 1986, my work took a significant turn. I decided to research the history of backwards phrases in the broadcast media since its inception, to see if any further trends could be unraveled.

Looking back now, I find it difficult to believe that up until that time I had researched only music and hadn't seriously considered normal speech. All that was about to change.

I obtained a recording of the history of radio from the 1920s to the present and began to play it backwards. One of the very first things that I heard backwards said, "Man will space-walk." This was a remarkably clear sentence tat seemed to 'jump out at me' from the gibberish. I immediately played the tape forwards and heard Neil Armstrong's famous first words o the Moon, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." I was stunned both at the clarity of the backwards statement and at its direct connection with the forwards statement.

Later that day I was to be stunned again when I heard the clear words backwards, "He's shot bad. Hold it. Try and look up." I played the tape forwards and heard a live commentary of the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, Texas. I isolated the precise forwards words responsible for the backwards statements. They were: "Parkland Hospital, there has been a shooting." They occurred at the precise moment that the radio commentator realised that a shooting had occurred.

This was amazing to me. It was a live commentary and the backwards words occurred as the reporter spoke in the field, not in a recording studio. There was no way this could have been orchestrated, and the message seemed to be a logical reflection of the thoughts this man might have had at the time; that is, horror at the realisation of an assassination ("He's shot bad"), and a frantic search for the source of the gun shots ("Hold it. Try and look up.").

The Moon walk was similar. It was a live commentary with the backwards sentence communicating what I assumed would have been Neil Armstrong's logical thoughts at the time. That is an expression of hope for the future of mankind in space, or "Man will space-walk".

I continued to find significant backwards phrases in this one record. There was the backwards sentence found on JFK's presidential inauguration. His famous words, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country", contained the backwards message, "Give Jack all your food."

Other famous historical events contained similarly amusing or poignant backwards messages that completely related to what was being spoken forwards, including one reversal on Lee Harvey Oswald that said, "Hear them. Wish to kill the President." This reversal was found on a radio broadcast recorded two weeks prior to the assassination of JFK. Oswald was talking forwards about the Fair Play For Cuba Committee.

One particularly amusing example was found with Australia's Prime Minister at the Time, Bob Hawke. Just after he won the 1987 Federal election, he was asked how he planned to celebrate. He replied with the comment, "Ah, several cups of tea." Backwards, this said, "Used to smoke the best marijuana." This example was later played repeatedly on Australian television as news of my research began to surface.

I should point out here that the moment of discovery of these phrases and sentences was particularly exciting for me because I usually had no idea what was on the forwards tape. I would do my research by playing my tapes backwards only. I did this deliberately to try to reduce my own bias. Thus a tremendous excitement was created simply by the process of hearing a backwards phrase and then discovering its incredible relationship, or complementarity, with the forwards soundtrack.

The years 1986 and 1987 were exciting. I ceased researching music and concentrated my efforts solely on speech. This added an entirely different dimension to my work.

I started to record normal room conversations and found backwards messages to be occurring constantly, often a frequently as every 10 or 15 seconds of speech. These backwards messages were nearly always complementary. I started to find out the secrets of my friends-things like lies they were telling, facts they were hiding, an affair someone was having, including the name of the person involved. Backwards phrases and sentences would often discus topics such as thoughts and feelings people had about each other. Then I started to find reversed conversations. Questions were being asked, answers were being given and it was all occurring backwards.

My entire world was turned upside down at that point. Any doubts I still had about random sound or imagination vanished. This was something very real and tangible, something very significant. This was the voice of truth, the real self speaking.

It all seemed to fall into place in the early months of 1987. I had discovered something and had to give it a name, write a theory, tell people about it. I pondered my research notes. I thought and theorised.

THE ULTIMATE TRUTH-DETECTOR?
Then, in April 1987, at three o'clock in the morning, I awoke with two words etched on my brain. The words were: Reverse Speech. That is what I called the phenomenon from that day onwards. The backwards phrases became known as Speech Reversals.

I had achieved my original research objectives. To my satisfaction I had determined what these backwards messages, or speech reversals, actually were and I had some plausible theories concerning their source.

I theorised they were another from of communication, possibly an undiscovered human sense. There was nothing occult or bizarre about it-those were merely sentiments people expressed when faced with the unknown or unexplained. The actual truth was far simpler and far more logical. The phenomenon was a natural function of the human mind.

I wrote my Theory of Reverse Speech and Speech Complementarity on that morning in April 1987 while I pondered these thoughts. The theory initially contained two points. Implicit in these points, but not specifically stated, as the assumption that the human brain automatically creates, hears and responds to both speech modes. A third point of my theory, with some stage. Here are the first two points of my theory, with some minor editing over the years:

1) Human speech has at least two separate yet complementary functions and modes. One mode occurs overtly, is broken forwards, and is under conscious control. The other mode occurs covertly, is spoken backwards mode of speech occurs simultaneously with the forwards speech.

2) These two modes of speech complement and depend upon each other. One mode cannot be fully understood without the other mode. In the dynamics of interpersonal communication, both modes, of speech combined communicate the total psyche, conscious and unconscious, of a person.

This was truly a revolutionary discovery! I knew that if my theory could be proved, the implications would be staggering. It could certainly be the ultimate truth-detector. It might help explain aspects of human intuition, possibly even provide an explanation for some forms of ESP. Maybe it could help us understand the human mind and discover the causes of behaviour and personality. And in my wildest musings I pondered the religious possibilities. Could reverse speech help us discover the nature of the soil? What, indeed, was speaking backwards? Was it the unconscious mind or something deeper, maybe even the spirit of the person? And what did those terms mean anyway?

PUBLISH AND BE DAMNED!
At that point I knew my research was not over but had only just begun. I had opened a Pandora's box. I needed to tell others of this discovery and obtain help from people whom I assumed would have far more knowledge than from the outback, the son of a simple Methodist preacher. I was actually aspiring to be a writer at the time I started my research, despite a few rejection slips already.

Who was I to be putting forward new theories about the nature of language and the unconscious mind? The entire concept was overwhelming, the task daunting. Where should I start?

I contracted the media and academic institutions but was met with rejection and sometimes open hostility. An example of this was a serious of correspondence I had in 1988 with Manfred Clyne, of Melbourne University, who was quite forceful and opinionated in his letters:

These are nothing more than illusions of the mind. …for the sake of humanity and your family I implore you to cease this endevour and put your energies into something more useful…the road of research is long tough and few survive it.

Letters phenomenon to be real. At the very least, I had sufficient documentation and enough evidence to warrant more consideration than I was receiving. I decided to prepare a convincing case and I began to compile all of my work into manuscript form. I would write a book. Maybe then people would listen to me.

I enlisted the help of my good friend. Greg Albrecht, who assisted me for the first few months of 1987 as I began to prepare the book manuscript. I entitled the proposed book, Beyond Backward Masking: Reverse Speech and the Voice of the Inner Mind. It was a significant step in the research because during the time of manuscript preparation, other trends and linguistic structures of the phenomenon began to emerge.

CATEGORIES OF REVERSE SPEECH
The first of these observations grew out of the Principle of Speech Complementarity. I knew that the forwards and reversed would usually relate to each other, yet I also knew that these relationships were not necessarily congruent. For example, the reversed phrase could some-times contradict the forwards phrase or it might say the same thing.

I divided the different types of phrases into several separate categories of complementary relationships, which I called categories of Reverse Speech:

1) Sometimes reversals would confirm what was being said forwards, saying the same thing with different words. I called these Congruent Reversals. On rare occasion, I would find reversals that said the same thing in exactly the same words! I found these examples fascinating, especially when they were six or seven words long.

2) Then there were Contradictory Reversals. These reversals were incongruent and contradicted what was said forwards. In time, I began to understand that it was the reversed statement that was the correct, or true, statement

3) Expansive Reversals gave additional information and expanded upon the forwards speech. They would insert facts that were left out either wittingly or unwittingly from the forwards dialogue. They also showed hidden motive and agenda behind the things that were said in forwards speech.

4) Internal Dialogue Reversals showed actual thoughts the person was having at the time of speaking. Sometimes these would show internal conversations that someone was having with themselves. For example, if part of you wanted to go out for the evening but another part of you wanted to stay at home, the entire struggle might appear backwards as a dialogue with self.

5) External Dialogue Reversals were specifically directed out to others in the form of requests, commands, questions and conversations. Have you ever thought something else was going on underneath the conversation? For example, meets girl and they talk about the weather, but we all know what they are really talking about. Sometimes I would find an entirely different conversation backwards from what was happening forwards.

6) Lead and Trail Reversals would occur that said something several seconds or even minutes before or after the same thing was said forwards. Have you ever had the feeling that you have said something before? Or, you know that someone is just not 'letting something go'? You were probably quite right. It was just all happening backwards. Or maybe you have been about to say something but someone else said it first. Possibly you thought, "Gee. I was just about to say that." You were probably experiencing the action of trail and lead reversals starting a conversation before it started and continuing it after it has finished.

7) Eventually I found a category of speech reversals that initially had me puzzled. I called these Comparative Reversals. Originally I had called them Non-Related Reversals because they seemed to have no relationship whatsoever with what was being said forwards. They annoyed me because they were the only hole in my theory of speech complementarity. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I finally saw the relationship: it was emotional.

These reversals talked about events in someone's life or were detailed statements that had exactly the same emotion as that being expressed forwards. Someone might say forwards that they'd had a bad day at work, and then might say backwards that they had a flat tyre last week or might even talk about Fred Jones whom they didn't like at the supermarket two years before. The complementarity was not in the words-it was in the emotions.

I breathed a sigh of relief. Not only was theory intact but this finding added an even greater dimension to complementarity.

STRUCTURES OF REVERSE SPEECH
The next observation was one relating to grammar and linguistic structure. I noticed that many reversals had a standard structure, usually between two and five consecutive words in a single sentence. However, there were those reversals that obviously deviated from this. I noted all these different forms and called them the Structures of Reversals Speech:

1) There were Long Sentences. Not very often, but sometimes I would find reversals of staggering length. There wee perfectly formed, long, sometimes with two or three sentences in the one reversal.

2) Then there were Single Words. I was very suspicious of single words backward. They could easily be explained by random occurrence. In time, though, I began to feel safe about documenting certain types of single words such as the expression of an emotion or an external command.

3) Cause and Effect Reversals had a unique grammatical structure that was very common to find backwards. They usually consisted of two sentences that related to each other. They would frequently make a statement, a fact, and then suggest a course of action; for example, "Book. Please read it," or "Pain. Let it go."

4) Sentence-Building Reversals were amazing and helped dispel any lingering doubts I still had about all this. The forwards and reversed would combine to form a complete sentence; for example, "I think they should eradicate all the crime in [Washington, DC]". Reversed, this is "the capital of America".

5) Mirror-Image Reversals similarly defined the imagination. The forwards and reversed would be a mirror image of each other. For example, "I love my husband very much", reversed is "I love my husband very much".

6) Finally came Semi-forward Reversals. Nearly all reversals I was documenting were well-defined. They were separated from the gibberish and it was very obvious where they began and finished. However, some reversals disappeared into the gibberish. They would always begin very clearly but the last word would simply vanish. This was frustrating, especially when it said something like, "The plans are in the …"!

ANALYSING SPEECH REVERSALS ON TAPE
I was comparing the transcripts I had compiled over the last year when I noted that many more reversals were being documented in normal conversation compared to public media broadcasts. So I started to do a time count and reversal count on all my transcripts, using a stopwatch. I then prepared charts that compared the average rate of reversal occurrence in any given conversational setting. This was a task that yielded tremendous results, but one which significantly added to my already overloaded research time.

It takes an incredible amount of time to analyse tapes for speech reversals. At that early stage in 1987, one 30-minutetape would take me three or four days to analyse thoroughly. Consequently I would spend hundreds of hours at my desk with headphones on, listening to tapes, making notes. This process included the following steps:

1) First I would do an initial run-through of the tape, backwards only, and prepare a preliminary transcript of the reverse phrases.

2) I would follow this with a second run-through of the tape from beginning to end, checking for reversals as I went by rapidly switching between forwards and reverse directions.

3) A more detailed transcript would then be prepared, initial reversals checked, more reversals found, and sections of the forwards dialogue transcribed.

4) Then I would do a final, third run-through and check all my results.

5) The transcripts would then be analysed and complementary relationships determined.

6) Finally, I would conduct a precise time-count of all reversals from the beginning of the tape to the end.

THE RIGHT-BRAIN CONNECTION
Within a few months I had a sufficient cross-section of transcripts from different settings to make some preliminary observations. In normal, relaxed room settings, speech reversals occurred on an average of one reversal every 10 seconds for conversation. If you were to add some emotion such as a heated argument, the reversal rate would go up rapidly, sometimes as often as one reversal every second or almost continuously. On the other end of the scale, in structured settings such as lectures, the rate of reversal occurrence would drop to an average of one reversal every one or two minutes if someone were reading without emotion from a prepared script.

So consistent were these observations that I used to test myself by randomly picking up tapes and playing them backwards only. I could usually tell what type of conversation it was simply by the number of reversals occurring in any given minute of tape time.

Soon I began to recognize other differences such as differing tonality and expression in speech reversals. These were determined not only by the type of conversation, but also by the topic being discussed at the time.

Thus another hypothesis stated that the amount of reversals occurring in any given conversation will be directly determined by the amount of emotion involved and the free-flowing, spontaneous nature of this conversation.

The similarities of my observation compared to the functions of the right brain hemisphere are striking. The right brain is considered to be highly emotional and creative. It is also believed to be responsible for the tonal inflections, on the other hand, is considered to be logical and ordered, responsible for the actual verbal content of speech.

Given these comparisons, I theorised that forwards speech was coming from the left brain hemisphere, and reverse speech was coming from the right brain hemisphere. I noted further similarities with other mental phenomena such as dyslexia. I found it fascinating that vision was reversed before being processed by the brain and I wondered if there might be a connection between these phenomena and reverse speech.

METAPHORS: ARCHETYPES OF THE MIND?
Probably the most significant observation that was made as the book manuscript was being prepared was that concerning metaphors. Ever since I began research in 1984 I had noted the appearance of many unusual words and mythological motives in backwards phrases, including references to the Garden of Eden, Camelot and Merlin, Satan and Lucifer, wolves and eagles, whirlwinds and saucers, even Hitler and Nazis, to name just a few.

My first clue came from my historical research of music and radio broadcasts since the 1920s. reversals that I found there indicated that these metaphors were not constant over the years but, rather, they seemed to ebb and flow with the changing tides of history. For example, I frequently found the words "Jesus" or "
Lucifer" in the 1920s and '30s, and Nazi" or "Hitler" in popular recordings from the 1940s and '50s. then in the 1960s, '70s and early '80s, new themes began to appear with words like "Satan" and "whirlwind". I assumed it was these references that prompted some of the early religious hysteria.

I was face with a new problem. What did these words mean? I began my research with religious writings and was eventually led to the works of Carl Jung who extensively explored mythology and metaphor in the early 20th century. I was particularly attracted to his work because of many similarities between his findings and my own. The metaphors I was discovering in reverse speech were also present in other phenomena such as dreams. Jung theorised that these words were archetypes of the mind. Although I didn't really know what that meant at the time, it put me on a new direction and I went back to the transcripts, seeking answers with a fresh approach.

REVERSE SPEECH: THE VOICE OF DEEP CONSCIOUSNESS
In its simplest form, reverse speech functions as an audible truth-detector. If a lie is spoken forwards, reverse speech will correct that lie and communicate the truth. If someone leaves facts and details out of their forwards speech, reverse speech may likewise communicate those facts. Speech reversals speak about anything, any topic on the person's mind. They may include the names of friends and lovers, events of the week or month, plans for the future, or real thoughts and real feelings.

Reverse speech is the voice of total consciousness, from the unconscious mind to the collective unconscious and even the soul itself. It can tell who we are, why we are here and how we work. It opens us up to the incredible wisdom buried deep within human consciousness.

I have already used the information obtained in reverse to revolutionise my practice as a hypnotherapist. I have found that one half-hour tape recording will usually give me the precise reason and cause for any person's behaviour. Using this information I have been able to rewrite effectively and powerfully the metaphoric structures of the unconscious using unique procedures that I have developed myself. This technique accesses deep consciousness at the level where metaphoric structures reside, and changes behaviour at its root level.

Now to the most amazing discovery of all. I realised a long time ago that reverse speech could predict human behaviour and future events, because I would see these events in people's reversals weeks and months before they would actually manifest. I used to explain this as the incredible computing power of mind, knowing and understanding things beforehand, but now my understanding has deepened even more.

I now believe that people's reversals are not only predicting the future and describing physical events, but they are actually creating them. In other words, the words of reverse speech as spoken by the unconscious mind are the actual words and forces of creation. We have often theorised that somehow we create our own reality, but now, with reverse speech, we can actually see how this happens.

Reverse speech is the word of creation. It is the power of divinity dwelling within us. As we speak, so does it occur. If we as a human race can come to grips with this incredible truth and ability that each one of us has, we can evolve and become the total masters of the universe around us. And the simple fact is, we are creating now. Our thoughts, attitudes and emotions are, at this very moment, manipulating and creating our physical world. Reverse speech gives us the ability to hear and see these words of creation and begin to gain conscious control over them.

This is my discovery. Truth is now upon us. We have no choice but to be totally honest, both to ourselves and to those around us, because the human mind is no longer private. We can now actually change our unconscious because reverse speech shows us how the structures of consciousness work. Not only that, but we can also change the planet is created and recreated time and time again. We do it as we think. We speak it into being.

Research: who pays, who profits?

"…the White House has approved a proposal to spend up to $1 billion to help US companies compete with Japan in making sophisticated computer display screens … The plan builds on current research programmes paid for by the Pentagon and the Energy Department, for which Congress already has authorized $100 million."
San Francisco Chronicle1

INDUSTRIAL GROWTH DEPENDS in part upon a steady stream of technological innovations. These advances improve the productivity of corporations, provide them with better access to geographically dispersed markets and resources, and expand the range of products they sell.

Corporations rely heavily on publicly funded research for these innovations. In the United States alone, government expenditures on research total some $65 billion a year. A recent study on the origins of technological innovation demonstrated that such research is a "fundamental pillar of industrial advance". The study showed that for the most part corporations do not rely on themselves for the research that fuels their growth: nearly three-quarters of American industrial patents in recent years were based on research financed by the public-either directly, by governments, or indirectly, through non-profit agencies.2

'Nearly three-quarters of American industrial patents in recent years were based on research financed by the public.'

The governments of industrialised countries are the biggest sources of funds for research and development. Among them, the US, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Canada provided more than $170 billion for research annually in the early 1990s.3 More than a third of that total went towards military spending, with spinoffs that eventually reach industry in general. Little of this spending generates anything of fundamental use to small-scale producers or locally-based economics, but instead adds to the technological treadmill that undermines rural life.

In agriculture and health, much of the research funding is being poured into biotechnology. The $3 billion the US government will be spending on the human genome project has garnered the most publicity, but numerous other biotech projects are also being funded. The US Department of Energy, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation have teamed up to provide $100 million for researching the genome of a small mustard-like plant that has emerged as a key model for genetic engineering. This research will ultimately benefit pharmaceutical and agricultural biotech firms.4 Similarly, the UK's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) provided businesses with 7.5 million in biotechnology R&D grants in 1994 alone. This research went hand-in-hand with DTI's Biotechnology Means Business Programme, which "promotes the use of modern biotechnology by companies which have not previously used it within their operations."5

Germany also earmarks considerable amounts of public funds for high-tech research. The German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR), for example, employs more than 4,000 people in seven research centres, working on aviation, space flight, and energy technologies. According to information provided by the organisation, "results from this research and development work… plays a significant role towards securing the industrial and technological position of Germany".6 Such public investments in research pay off handsomely for corporations, which can improve their efficiency and obtain marketable innovations at little or no cost.

A COSY RELATIONSHIP
Though geared toward the needs of corporations, much of the research conducted today occurs on university campuses. The universities themselves are willing participants in this system, since the flow of grant money from governments increasingly depends on performing research that corporations want. Universities can even make out at both ends by receiving payments for the fruits of research conducted at public expense.

Lawrence Soley describes how this works at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For a small fee, some 300 corporations are provided with M.I.T. research reports, invited to symposia and seminars, and given personal access to M.I.T.'s faculty. As the catalogue for the university's Industrial Liaison Program unabashedly points out, M.I.T. places "at the disposal of industry the expertise and resources of all the schools, departments and laboratories of M.I.T." The $10,000 to $ 50,000 per year corporations pay is a pittance, considering that they are being given access to the half-billion dollars in research done at M.I.T. annually - almost all of which is funded by the US government.7

Similarly, the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee licenses research findings to corporations and works directly with them on product development. The aim of its Office of Industrial Research and Technology Transfer is to help "business and industry…convert research results obtained in the university into commercial products, process and services."8 As at M.I.T., most of those research results are the product of public funding.

Sometimes corporations pay substantially more than bargain basement rates for the research they require. But Monsanto's $62 million arrangement with Washington University, Hoescht's $70 million deal with Harvard, and Ciba-Geigy's $20 million payoff to the University of California at San Diego effectively turn those institutions into appendages of the corporations that fund them. For their dollars, the companies get exclusive licences, patent rights, early access to research results, and access to the labs themselves. Despite the relatively large sums involved, the corporations are paying only a fraction of the cost of research; the difference is effectively a public subsidy.9

The marriage of corporate industry and publicly funded research institutions is now commonplace: a research center planned for Harvard University's Institute of Medicine, for example, will devote almost half its space to corporate offices and research facilities. Harvard will own the patents to any discoveries made at the institute, while the corporations will be allowed to market them. As usual, substantial funding will come from the US government, which currently provides more than half the $650 million annual budget of Harvard's Medical School and its affiliates.10

Even research funded by the former Soviet Union is now being exploited by corporations: in 1990, Monsanto paid $500,000 to a team of Russian biological scientists at Moscow's Shemyakin Institute in return for the right to market their discoveries in the West.11

European universities and corporations are similarly intertwined, but the European Commission is concerned that the relationship is not intimate enough. Thus, Europe's "limited capacity to convert scientific breakthroughs and technological achievements into industrial and commercial success [stems from] the still inadequate links between universities and business …and the lack of co-ordinated strategies between businesses, universities and the public authorities …"

In the future, therefore, Europe will be taking steps to further facilitate "the transfer of technologies from university laboratories to companies …"12

HIGH TECHNOLOGY, BIG SCALE
These trends are troubling not only because they reveal another layer of corporate welfare, but more importantly because of the inherent nature of the technologies that are being created with public funds. For the most part, the research infrastructure is creating technologies suitable only for the needs and purposes of huge corporations, thus propelling society still further in the direction of the large and global.

Even funding for basic research - which is thought to simply 'expand the frontiers of knowledge' - inherently promotes larger scale: as scientific knowledge has grown, so has the scale of technology infrastructures far beyond the small laboratories and backyard workshops of earlier scientists and inventors. The scale and the cost involved have already grown so large that only huge enterprises have the ability to conduct basic research or apply the findings.

Applied research is now so expensive in high-tech fields that even the largest business have difficulty financing it on their own - which helps explain the many mergers and partnerships among technology firms. When Toshiba entered into an agreement with rival Siemens, a spokesperson for the former said,

"The objective is to share the costs and the risk … because the development of the next generation of semiconductors requires huge costs - huge costs - and it is very difficult for any one company to do it alone."13

The expanding scale of technology also requires a parallel expansion in economic scale. Akio Morita, head of the Sony Corporation and a member of the Trilateral Commission, argued that "making the whole of the developed world essentially one big market" was necessary if industries were to sustain their growth curves:

"This is particularly true for the increasing technology-intensive manufacturing sector, which requires global markets to justify its huge investment needs".14

In other words, today's technologies are so expensive they are only viable in the context of a huge, globalised economy.

The main beneficiaries of technologies created by publicity-funded research are corporations. If individuals can be said to benefit at all from these innovations, it is only in their role as consumers of an expanding line of corporate products. The technologies themselves remain firmly in the hands of corporations, adding to their power while furthering everyone else's dependence on the corporate world.

Some innovations help provide the infrastructure needed by large-scale economies: more efficient and higher speed transport, faster and more reliable telecommunications networks, new means of extracting energy from the Earth. Research in other areas - pharmaceuticals and biomedical products, agricultural chemicals and machinery, building products, etc. - is giving corporations tighter control over people's everyday needs.

Some research merely enables corporations to encourage consumers to buy new products - part of the 'new and improved' treadmill that keeps consumption high by creating new needs. One heralded achievement of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Center for Product Innovation, for example, was a redesigned coffee-pot for the Norelco Corporation.15 And the US Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has teamed up in a "strategic alliance" with toymaker Mattell on a "Hot Wheels JPL Sojourner Mars Rover Action Pack Set" - described in a pass release as "one example of how the Jet Propulsion Technology Affiliates Program works with industry".16 Your tax dollars at work.

UNDERMINING SMALL SCALE
Most new technologies inherently benefit larger-scale operators at the expense of smaller ones. Nowhere has this been more true than in agriculture. In his book The Growth Illusion, ecological economist Richard Douthwaite describes how the introduction of diesel and electric irrigation pumps to a small village in India favoured the farmers who had the capital to invest in them, while those who remained with traditional methods - based on oxen - were irreparably harmed. The new pumps allowed more water to be pumped, and raised the yields of the farmers that used them. But the increased production ultimately led to a drop in crop prices; the water table also fell, adding to the burden on farmers using traditional irrigation methods.17

Thus, this one new technology had increased the gap between the richest and poorest in the village, ultimately driving some farmers off the land; it also understanding the long-term sustainability of the agricultural system by depleting ground water supplies; and it siphoned money from the village to industrial pump manufacturers and energy firms. Yet the technology was no doubt introduced to the village by the agents of 'development' as a great step forward.

A similar pattern of events has unfolded in the industrialised world as well, as new technologies centred on machinery and chemical inputs increased labour productivity, but hurt small producers and ultimately decimated rural life. In Vermont, for example, half the dairy farmers in the state were driven out of business when refrigerated bulk tanks replaced the old 40-quart milk cans in the 1950s. The cost of adopting the new technology was too great for farms with less than 30 cows, and 20,000 small family farm workers were driven off the land. 18 The mechanical tomato-picker had a similar impact in California. The machine reduced the cost of harvesting tomatoes by $5-7 per ton, but the $50,000 price tag meant that only the largest farms could use it profitably. This one technology, developed at public expense by researchers at the University of California, led to a decline in the number of tomato farms from 4,000 in the early 1960s to about 600 in 1973.19

LAND GRANT COLLEGES
In the United States, much of the country's agricultural research takes place at hand grant colleges, institutions that were created specifically to strengthen and serve small farmers and rural life. Looking at that infrastructure reveals much about the impact of publically-funded research.

The land grant system - created by a series of legislative acts in the late 19th and early 20th centuries - consists of agricultural colleges, experiment stations, and extension services. The language of the acts setting up the system leaves little doubt that it was intended to help maintain an agricultural way of life and a rural economy. Reference was made to "a sound and prosperous agricultural and rural life", and the "development and improvement of the rural home". The system was meant to "assure agricultural a position in research equal to that of industry, which will aid in maintaining an equitable balance between agriculture and other segments of the economy." It would also help disseminate "useful and practical information on subjects relating to agriculture and home economics."20

If the land grant colleges had stayed true to these goals, they might have helped small farmers survive. Instead, the system ended up treating agriculture like any other industry, in which the primary goal is to increase production in general and labour productivity in particular. Most of the meaningful research and teaching in the land grant system was eventually devoted to technological innovations - primarily machinery and chemical inputs-that improved 'efficiency' so well that the vast majority of farmers were made redundant. In a description that sounds similar to trends in universities today, Jim Hightower and Susan DeMarco point out who this research has really helped:

"It is the largest-scale growers, the farm machinery and chemicals input companies and the processes who are the primary beneficiaries. Machinery companies such as John Deere, International Harvester, Massey-Ferguson, Allis-Chalmer and J.I. Case almost continually engage in co-operative research efforts at land grant colleges. These corporations contribute money and some of their own research personnel to help land grant scientists develop machinery. In return, they are able to incorporate technological advances in their own products. In some cases they

In the US, the energy sector is largely run by private-sector corporations, but massive subsidies have been provided to keep companies healthy, profitable, and growing. The watchdog group Alliance to Save Energy has estimated that the energy sector is subsidized at the rate of $21 billion to $36 billion annually.8 For the oil industry alone, subsidies and tax breaks have been in place for some 75 years, and have amounted to many billions of dollars. Another public interest group, Citizens for Tax Justice, estimates that just one tax break - the percentage depletion allowance - will cost the public Treasury $4.2 billion over the 1995-99 period. This is actually an improvement over earlier years, since the allowance was even greater up until 1975: in that year alone, the tax break amounted to $3 billion.9

While the risks to the overseas operations of US oil companies are covered by taxpayers through the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, the US military further minimizes corporate risk by ensuring that regimes friendly to US interests gain power and hold onto it in oil-rich parts of the world. Importantly, this also ensures the continuous flow of oil. Protecting this source of energy does not come cheap. According to Edwin S. Rothschild, Energy Policy Director of Citizen Action, "the national security cost of oil is in the area of $57 billion per year; or approximately $9.19 per barrel of oil used in the US."10

Externalized costs sometimes run even higher. Despite all the rhetoric about democracy, the Gulf War was fought to ensure that the Kuwaiti and Saudi Arabian oil fields continued to supply the industrialised world with the energy it requires. The direct costs for "Desert Storm" alone were over $60 billion, spread out among all the governments that participated.11 This does not include the cost to Iraq, nor does it put any value on the lives lost or the damage done to Persian Gulf ecosystems. None of these military costs is internalized in the price of petroleum.

SUBSIDIES FOR OTHER ENERGY SOURCES
The US government provides energy subsidies for more than just the oil industry: since the goal has been to promote the growth of industry in general, subsidies are provided for all the large-scale, centralized energy forms the industrial system requires. As early as World War I, for example, the government was building dams to supply electric power to the munitions industry, and later to provide reliable power to the pacific Northwest's aluminium and aircraft industries.12 Today, government agencies or co-operative provide roughly one-fourth of all the electricity sold in the US. These producers benefit from indirect subsidies totaling $2.2 billion annually.13

Major US electric utilities are poised to receive another major windfall from taxpayers. As deregulation of the industry proceeds, it seems likely that so-called 'stranded costs' will be passed on to taxpayers and consumers. In large measure these costs are the result of bad investments - usually nuclear power plants that are uncompetitive with other sources of electricity. Instead of writing off these losses, there are legislative moves places the value of the bailout at from $50 billion to $300 billion, while consumer and environment activities say it could reach $500 billion.14

Another way the federal government subsidizes a centralized energy infrastructure is by making sure that public lands are available for energy extraction. Approximately 750,000 acres of coal-bearing public land - containing over 1.5 billion tons of coal - are currently leased to mining interests. Oil companies have acquired leases to explore for oil on some 58, 000 federally-owned sites, including 5,000 offshore sites on the continental shelf, and the Clinton administration has recently authorised oil drilling in a previously sacrosanct wilderness area in Alasaka. In total, over 125 million barrels of oil and 1.7 trillion cubic feet of gas were extracted from federal lands in 1993 alone.15

The coal industry has been the recipient of many generous subsidies. The government sponsors research into technologies needed by the industry-including the Department of energy's $2.5 billion Clean Coal Technology programme. Government agencies ranging from the National Science Foundation to the Department of Defense also sponsored research on behalf of the coal industry - totaling $138 million in 1989. Mitigating the damage done by surface mining costs the public an additional $800 million a year.16

To these subsidies must be added the externalized costs of coal extraction and burning. Until 1977, no environmental reclamation on mines was required, and strip-mining operations in particular left behind scarred landscapes and polluted rivers and streams.17 Coal-fired power plants release heavy metals that pollute land and water many hundreds of miles downwind. They are prime culprits in the acid rain problem, and they add significant amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. The pollutants they discharge also do significant damage to cropland and to public health. None of these costs is internalized in the price of coal: if they were, the price of coal might be ten times what it is today. Two researchers in England in dependently estimated the environmental coasts of electricity produced by coal-fired power stations: for each kilowatt-hour priced at less than 10p, estimates of the environmental costs ranged as high as 1.

Since its baseline is firmly drawn in the industrial era, modern education focuses far more on the workings of the technosphere than the biosphere. The implicit message is that life itself ultimately depends on technology and human-made institutions, not on the natural world. This delinking is a frequent feature of learned treatises on modern problems. A Yale University economist thus dismissed the impact of the greenhouse effect on the US, since "climate has little economic impact upon advanced industrial societies':

"Cities are increasingly becoming climate-proofed by technological changes like air-conditioning and shopping malls. …Studies of the impact of global warming on the United States and other developed regions find that the most vulnerable areas are those dependent on unmanaged ecosystems - on naturally occur ring rainfall, run-off and temperatures, and the extremes of these variables…. Most economic activity in industrialised countries, however, depends very little on the climate. Intensive care units of hospitals, underground mining, science laboratories, communications, heavy manufacturing and microelectronics are among the sectors likely to be unaffected by climatic change. In selecting whether to set up in, say, Warsaw or Hongkong, few business will consider temperature a weighty factor."13

In this view, the world inhabited by industrialised peoples is so divorced from nature that major disruption to the biosphere would scarcely be noticed. Disruptions to the technosphere, on the other hand, would be catastrophic: "There is no life today without [computer] software", an executive of a major US based corporation claimed. Without computers, "the world would probably just collapse."14

As David Orr has observed about modern schooling, faith in technology "is built into nearly every part of the curriculum as a kind of blind acceptance of the notion of progress." 15 But corporations also use the educational infrastructure to gain acceptance for the specific technologies they control. This is particularly true in America, where corporations provide cash-starved schools with free study materials and teacher's kits laden with corporate-friendly messages. Monsanto, the corporation responsible for biotechnologies ranging from Roundup-ready soybeans to genetically-engineered bovine hormone, recently conferred an 'environmental' award on company employees who devised a "student education project … that worked to raise student awareness about environmental benefits from biotechnology."16 Along with seed corporation Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Monsanto also underwrote Field of Genes, a classroom curriculum for teachers that gives an industry spin on genetics, biotechnology, and genetic engineering.17 Similarly, the timber-industry giant Weyerhauser created a teacher's guide that suggests students discuss the "innovative practices" Weyerhauser has introduced to forest management.18

TRAINING FOR THE CORPORATE ECONOMY
A further function of the modern educational system is to prepare children and young adults for jobs in a corporate-dominated global economy. Even corporations readily admit that they depend on the educational infrastructure to churn out their labour force. Eminent European chemists recently issued a report concluding that Europe's chemical industry would relocate to another part of the world unless research received more government support. One of the report's authors noted that "industry is reliant on universities for its workforce, so we must ensure that academic institutions are properly funded".19

Having grown wealthier than many governments, corporations are increasingly willing to pay for the right to tailor the educational infrastructure to their specific needs. Corporations endow university chairs, pay for the construction of buildings and research facilities, and fund whole departments in fields useful to their commercial enterprises. England's Loughborough University, for example, is now offering a Bachelor of science degree in "Retail Automotive Management" - the country's first university-level degree in car-selling. Funding for the programme is being provided in part by the Ford Motor Company.20

Since corporations need a steady supply of MBAs, business schools have little trouble attracting corporate support. In Leasing the Ivory Tower, Lawrence Soley describes how the funding sources for a new building at Michigan State's business school are documented in the names of various building components:

"The second floor of the building is named after the Kresge Foundation, a 350-seat lecture hall is named for the Ford Motor Company, the fourth floor is named for a Toyota dealer, the fifth floor is named for the Chrysler Corporation, and the MBA lounge is named for the First of Michigan Corp."21

Corporate labels go on more than just building parts. Thanks to Bank of America's $3 million donation to the University of California at Berkeley, the new dean of the University's business school, Laura d'Andrea Tyson, is officially the 'Bank of America Dean'.

Though their influence is not always this visible, corporations are quite clear about what they expect from the educational system. In Britain a Graduate Employability Test, which "objectively measures and profiles the skills most often specified by employers", focuses on just three areas: "business awareness", "personal working style", and "computer skills".22 There is nothing location-specific about these skills, nor is there anything remotely connected with critical thinking, civic responsibility or moral understanding.

Today's well-trained workers can be ignorant about the local ecosystem, but their computer training must be up to snuff. According to Bill Gates, failure to be computer-adept means "you risk being ineffective in almost any kind of work you pursue".23 US government leaders apparently agree, since they are spending billions of dollars in public funds to equip schools with computers and to wire them for Interest access, with the goal of providing online access for every 12-year old. As bill Clinton explained, "This can make all the difference for communities struggling to make sure their students are ready for the 21st century."24

Monsanto plans to control water resources

Transnational giant Monsanto has identified anew business opportunity because of the emerging water crisis and the funding available to make this vital resource available to people.

As it states in its strategy paper: "First, we believe that discontinuities (either major policy changes or major trendline breaks in resource quality or quantity) are likely, particularly in area of water, and we will be well-positioned via these business [owned by Monsanto and mentioned earlier in the paper] to profit even more significantly when these discontinuities occur.

"Second, we are exploring the potential of non-conventional financing (NGOs, World Bank, USDA, etc.) that may lower our investment or provide local country business-building resources."

Thus, the crisis of pollution and depletion of water resources is viewed by Monsanto as a business opportunity. For Monsanto, "sustainable development" means the conversion of an ecological crisis into market of scarce resources…

Inudstry-Funded Aspartame Studies

Serious questions have been raised about the reliability of industry-sponsored studies of the safety of synthetic chemicals. Aspartame in particular has been the focus of significant ongoing controversy.
Studies of aspartame in the peerreviewed medical literature were surveyed for funding source and study outcome. Of the 166 studies felt to have relevance for questions of human safety, 74 had Nutrasweet®-industry-related funding and 92 were independently funded.

One hundred per cent of the industry-funded research attested to aspartame's safety, whereas 92 per cent of the independently funded research identified problems with aspartame.

A bibliography supplied by the Nutrasweet® company included many studies of questionable validity and relevance, with multiple instances of the same study being cited up to six times.

The Sky Really is falling!

According to British Antarctic Survey scientists, the ionosphere is 'falling' at the rate of about 200 metres per years. The findings come from an analysis of 600,000 measurements of the ionosphere's height taken over the past 38 years using echosounding technology.

Scientists are divided as to whether the ionospheric contraction is a result of greenhouse gases and the depletion of the ozone layer, or whether it is caused by cyclic changes in the Sun and resultant sunspot activity.

Dr Phil Wilkinson, from the Australian Government's Ionospheric Predication Service, commented that the ionosphere is modulated strongly by the Sun and that sunspot activity is approaching its peak.

Israeli Germ Warfare Designed to Kill Arabs?

Claims made by the London Sunday Times last November [1997], that Israel is working on a biological weapon which is genetically targeted against Arabs, received a boost when Foreign Report, a Jane's publication which monitors security and defence matters, also reported that Israeli scientists have used South African genetic warfare research in an attempt to develop an "ethnic bullet".

Israeli scientists at super-secret Nes Tziyona biowarfare laboratory near Tel Aviv are attempting to engineer deadly micro-organisms that only attack DNA within the cells of victims with distinctive Arab genes. Nes Tziyona produces a wide range of chemical and biological weapons and is reportedly larger than all Arab and Iranian biowarfare laboratories combined.

The research mirrors biological studies conducted by South African scientists during the apartheid era and disclosed in testimony before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Daan Goosen, head of a South African chemical and biological warfare facility, said his team was ordered in the 1980s to develop a "pigmentation weapon" to target only black people.

The British Medical Association has become so concerned about the lethal potential of genetically based biological weapons that it has opened an investigation, due to report in January 1999.

Pharmaceutical Companies Put Profits Before Need

Multinational pharmaceutical companies focus their research and development on high-profile, profit-making drugs like Viagra instead of developing cures for life-threatening diseases in poorer countries. Viagra earned more that one billion dollars in its first year, for instance. Through representatives of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America claim that some funds are directed towards eliminating tropical diseases, neither they nor individual firms are willing to provide statistics.

Research into Third World tropical diseases is not being extensively considered or produced. A recent and effective medicine for African sleeping sickness was pulled from production, while older remedies are no longer available because they are not needed in the US. AIDS continues to receive the most attention in the Third World, mainly because the disease also remains a threat to the First World.

Since the release of this story, Doctors Without Borders won the Nobel Prize and announced an international campaign to increase access to key drugs.

Turkey Destroys Kurdish Villages with US Weapons

In 1995, the Clinton Administration recognised that the Turkish Government used American arms in domestic military operations where human rights abuses occurred. In fact, turkey had forcibly evacuated, leveled and burned more than 3,000 Kurdish villages in the past decade. Most of the atrocities, which have cost over 40,000 lives, took place during Clinton's first term in office.

As an ally of the US through NATO, Turkey receives US weapons from dozens of companies including Hughes, Being, Raytheon and General Dynamics. Despite a horrifying Amnesty International report on violent abuse, the state Department passed arms deals with Turkey. The war in Turkey represents the greatest use of US weapons in combat anywhere in the world today.

NATO Defends Private Economic Interests in the Balkans

As a result of NATO's success in the military conflicts of Bosnia and Kosovo, NATO's member nations have been provided with the political and economic opportunities to partake in the exploitation of the significant mineral resources in the Balkans.

In addition, Western multinational corporations are now well positioned to access the lucrative oil refining industry needed at a terminal end of the pipeline, as per the agreement which was formally signed last November by President Clinton and the presidents of four key Caspian-region nations. The proposed pipeline routes will divert oil and gas from the Caspian Sea area to either Mediterranean or Eastern European terminals for export to the Western nations, thus avoiding the competing interests of either Russia or Iran.

Successful re-establishment of NATO's military presence in the Balkans has made real the goal of a leaked 1992 document of a Pentagon plan to preserve NATO as the primary instrument for Western security interests as well as the channel for US influence and participation in European affairs.

Louisiana Promotes Toxic Racism

Contained within the boundaries of a 100-mile [161-km] stretch of land between Baton Rouge and New Orleans are seven oil refineries and 175 heavy industrial plants. The area is locally called "cancer Alley". The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that the majority of the 23 million pounds of toxic waste released into the air are in two zip-code areas, primarily inhabited by African-Americans.

A 1992 National Law Journal investigation found that even when the government enforces the environmental regulations against companies in violation, the fines levied in these areas are significant lower than those levied in white communities.

Prompted by an increase in public awareness, President Clinton signed an executive order in 1993 to open investigation into the impact of the petrochemical industry's practices in these communities of colour.

Despite the rhetoric, little has changed amongst the targeted communities. On the contrary, the State of Louisiana has run full-page promotional ads in the Wall Street Journal, promising significant incentives for large corporate industries to relocate to the state, and touting the state's passage of tort reform legislation that limits the liability of legislation that limits the liability of companies which lose negligence suits and restricts the ability of citizens to file claims against "these protected companies".

The US and NATO Deliberately Started the War with Yugoslavia

The US and NATO pushed for war with Yugoslavia by demanding full military occupation of the entire country as a condition of not bombing. Belgrade could not accept the US-drafted two-part Rambouillet ultimatum, not only because it was a thinly veiled plan to detach KOSOVO from Serbia, but also because it contained provisions even worse than loss of that historic province - provisions no sovereign country in the world could possibly accept. Unreported in the mainstream media was the fact that when Serbia rejected the treaty it also passed a resolution declaring its willingness to negotiate Kosovo's self-management.

For months, the Serbian Government offered to negotiate. High-level government teams made many trips to Pristina to hold talks with Ibrahim Rugova and other non-violent ethnic Albanians. The Albanians refused to negotiate, for fear of going against the rising rebel movement, the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), which was hostile to any compromise and ready to assassinate "traitors" who dealt with Serbs.

America's Largest Nuclear Test Exposed Thousands

Thirty years ago, Amchitka, Alaska, was the site of three large underground nuclear tests, including the most powerful nuclear explosion ever detonated by the United States. Despite claims by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the Pentagon that the test sites would safely contain the radiation released by the blasts for thousands of yours, independent research by Greenpeace and newly released documents from the Department of Energy (DoE) show that the Amchitka tests began to leak almost immediately.

The blast ruptured the crust of the earth, sucking a creek into a brand new aquifer-a radioactive one. Highly radioactive elements and gases poured out of the collapsed test shafts, leached into the groundwater and worked their way into ponds, creeks and the Bering Sea.

Spanish pilot confirms NATO deliberately bombed yugoslav civilians

Captain Adolfo Luis Martin de la Haz, who returned to Spain at the end of may after participating in the NATO bombings against Yugoslavia, says that NATO's repeated bombing of civilian and non-military targets were not the result of war "errors".

"Once there was a coded order from the North American [US] military that we should drop anti-personnel bombs over the localities of Prishtina and Nish. Our colonel refused it altogether, and a couple of dys later his transfer orders came.

"The Spanish military denounces that the Spanish government not only does not try to inform themselves but they also accept the false reports that are edited for them in Aviano, where there is a sort of military Press cabinet in the hands of North American generals and functionaries.

"Here they say that several operations were directed by Spanish commanders and pilot. Lies over lies. All the missions that we flew, all and each one, were planned by US high military authorities. They were all planned in great detail, including attacking planes, targets and type of ammunition that we had to use. We [the Spanish] never directed anything, and or missions were limited to flying over the borders of Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Slovakia.

"No journalist has the slightest idea about what is happening in Yugoslavia. They [NATO] are destroying the country, bombing it with new weapons, toxic nerve gases, surface mines dropped by parachute, bombs containing uranium, black napalm, sterilization chemicals, sprayings to poison the crops, and weapons of which even we still do not know anything.

"The North Americans are committing one of the biggest barbarities that can be committed against humanity. A lot of very bad things will be told in the future about what was happening there, because, by the way, judging by what w talked about with the British and German officers, it was designed in order to divide the Europeans and keep us subjected for many decades."
